Since moving to the South, one of my pet peeves is these people down here put everything in the frig. including pizza. If you cover the food, you don’t have to refrigerate if you’re going to eat it later that day or even the next day. We get Pizza in Chicago. You can put it in the oven covered, then eat it the next day. I remember a rep came in with pizza for the staff one day, after they finished, it was into the frig. It was still warm...I asked, “Why do you put food in the frig, even when it’s still warm?” Answer: “We don’t want to get food poisoning..”
Yesterday, someone brought in a full tray of Panera half sandwiches, you know with various meats and spreads. The girls ate around noon. I get back in the break room around 2 and they had the entire tray of sandwiches in the frig. Cold. I had to then nuke a sandwich, you know makes the meat tough as shoe leather, not to mention the lettuce and tomatoes soggy...”I said why can’t you keep these out, they’re still covered for a couple hours at least?” Answer: “We don’t want to get Salmonella food poisoning...”
I know exactly what your talking about. Once its in the frig. UGH! I refuse to eat soggy bread.
In hot weather (80+ deg F) germs will grow much faster on moist food. May be that is why southerners rather be safe than sorry. I always use toaster oven to warm left over food. Microwave will make meat rubbery when re-heated. And regular oven will dry it out.
I hear you big time. And the other one is improper prep/ washing of produce not keeping in mind the issues with the mirgrant worker "pickers"
