Then you know how exposed you feel with no cover at all and all the bullet impacts very visible around you.

I despise McCain and think he is a traitor to the U.S. on too many counts to name. However, we need to stay FAR AWAY from this under-duress crap, especially Kelli Ward

“There are many reasons to loathe McCain. This is not one of them.”

None of us on this thread has the right to judge McCain during those years in the Hanoi Hilton.

......But his fellow POWs do have that right. I have always heard McCain was unpopular among his fellow POWs for his actions.

Does anyone know the truth of this?

As for his service record it appears he was as bad a pilot as he is a Senator.

Yes Trump will be blamed, because Trump said he “liked people that didn’t get captured”. They will probably say that “Trump supporters” will stop at nothing. This does not help anyone and whoever did it is certainly not advancing Trump’s cause.

A sad memory in US history and whatever you think of McCain his service to the country was real and if he broke down under torture - it’s completely understandable, I am sure many of us would; he was supposedly brave in other respects. If anyone would consider this broadcast some huge factor to decide their vote they are crazy.

Drumming up McCain’s one redeeming quality instead of his record was a huge mistake, the public *was* forgetting all about his POW status, until Trump blurted out the reminder.

Imagine how far ahead Trump would be if he had a filter that held him back from going off at random. Or would he? Maybe it’s the raw dirty obvious complete “real opinions” (even very poor-chosen words like those he had for McCain) that give him the outsider appeal.

Definitely an independent thinker. He died in 2005. But it doesn’t seem that long ago. I enjoyed his interviews on FNC — totally down to Earth.

An unconventional quality of political character in my opinion.

He’s turning 80! Voters of Arizona it’s time for McCain to collect his ample pension and leave us the hell alone.

Correct. Not everyone can be broken.

Louis Zamperini is a perfect example. A true war hero and a prisoner of war who was never broken. His story was made into a movie The Unbroken. Everyone should see it. Especially John McCain.

This is BS: he was mistreated, tortured, and kept in horrific conditions. That script was written by the enemy and he was coerced into reading it. He refused early repatriation and spent five and a half long years in that hell.

I agree completely.

That tape should not be held against him.

If you reside in Arizona, vote Ward on 30 August!

I served under a former Hanoi Hilton POW. People sure have some weird notions that when Jettison is done it's a float down and all is well. The POW I knew we'd see him walking down the passageway. He'd suffered serious lasting injuries that even in the late 1970's were still easy to spot. He was shot down and the jettison process and landing messed him up. This man was one of the longest held. So much for the John Wayne's in here saying what they would of done. Oh and he was on the list of about 300 former high ranking retired officers supporting McCain in 2008.

I can PM the name for you to confirm what I am saying about the person and endorsement but I won't post it due to "I wanna Conspiracy" Tin Foil Kookery.

Not that I said that McCain is a sorry senator. I would not want him elected dog catcher. However his service has been attacked even by Morons thinking he caused the Forestall fire when plane spotting made it an impossibility.

There used to be a poster in here that came up with real whoppers for Navy conspiracies including we sank the Kursk LOL. He was nuked from the site.

I will say this about McCain. he could have avoided combat with his connections. he didn't. Even after seeing an inferno hell happen few could comprehend he went back to the fight.

Politically I hope McCain is finished. But as a sailor who served this nation I wish him well.

Yes, to say the least. The refreshing thing about Trump is the fact that his political correctness meter is hard-coded to ZERO. But also that’s what the MSM will exploit every day. Time will tell if it pays off and how much he backs away from the “honest” approach.

Endorsing Ryan and McCain wasn’t what I would have expected. The next week would seem essential to his future.

It’s been a pretty good marketing tool. Perhaps instead he could behave like a polished politician and speak like one too, maybe have the ethics of them. Or he can be Trump.

I know of at least one who endorsed him in 2008 and he was a senior officer. I doubt the validity of stories that he broke anymore than others did. Every man has a breaking point. Torture was an ongoing thing lasting for years after capture. One pilot I know of was tortured for over two years and in solitary confinement.

McCain once refusing cooperation would have had it worse because they wanted a confession out of the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Command's son once they knew who he was. North Vietnam had no Geneva Convention rules for POW treatment. How long does any Freeper think they could last having the enemy breaking their bones? Delirium sets in.

Hating his politics and even conduct in the senate is fine. Service wise man could have easily dodged air combat duty and had an easier and much safer duty as a ships company officer in many fields with far less risk and still climbed up the chain of command ladder. But it take being a Pilot to become a C.O. of a carrier as far as I know. He could have also likely done submarine duty. Pilot especially in that era was one of the most dangerous jobs in the Navy with the exception of patrol boats. Lots of planes were shot down and lots of planes were lost along with pilot due to mechanical issues. Sometimes the pilot made it out and sometimes they didn't. I saw that on my ship in the late 70's. IIRC one variant of A-6 was grounded for a while in the late 1970's because they were dropping like rocks right after launch.

LOL... I like that; though, I avoid hard-coding such things.

Regarding Ryan/McCain, Trump has earned the clout to hand out the rope. Now it’s up to Ryan to avoid his political hanging.

The prevailing rules of conduct in this situation is The UCMJ AND the Geneva Convention’s (Art 17)...
McCain was wrong and provided “Aid and Comfort to the Enemy”

I agree in sentiment

That said

McCain was no Jim Stockdale

Now that was a man....tough....tougher than me and I know it

The Brett Favre of POWs

Very rare a man endure like he did

And how he was maligned in that debate

Disgusting...he deserves a statue somewhere

McCain made over a dozen messages according to Vietnam. This is just one of them. They have all his radio messages in Hanoi.

This is why McCain earned the nick name, “Song Bird” by his fellow P.O.W.s at the Hanoi Hilton. McCain was terrified to be tortured. So he gave the North Vietnamese all the information like the routes of the Navy and Marine Coro planes coming off the U.S. Navy ships to hit Vietnam. I wonder how many Navy and Maribe pilots were killed because of Song Bird giving the routes?

McCain made these propghanda messages for North Vietnam too. They try to send McCain back, but he said no because anyone that went back meant they talked to the enemy, and McCain did not want to label a traitor.

My understanding was that it was bad for McCain the first 3 weeks before they knew who he was the son of Admiral McCain a WWII hero. John is nothing like his father. Anyway, John was injured because he did not bail out right. That’s why he was injured.

Anyhow, the north Viennese made John their errands boy. He would dry clean the guards clothes, get food, get the prosttitutes, etc... and DID NOT live like the rest of the P.O.W.s.
