Revamped “Mikado” targets the ugly tradition of ‘yellowface'
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | August 8, 2016 | Thomas Lee

Several years ago, when I was living in Minneapolis, I drove to suburban Shakopee to see a performance of “Anything Goes.” I had no particular desire to see the show but wanted to support a friend who had a small part in the Cole Porter musical.

I soon regretted my decision.

The production featured two Chinese characters named Ching and Ling, whose cartoonish antics greatly amused the crowd. To make matters worse, Ching and Ling were actually played by the white director’s sons, each with red hair, no less.

Once again, I was seemingly the only Asian in a crowd of mostly older white people.

Damn old white people once again supporting the arts. This guy should get over it and go see Hamilton.

So the guy had no problem with the revamped musical set in Italy and the actors were not Italian?

The show ranks up there with Mickey Rooney’s infamous role as I.Y. Yunioshi in the film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”

That was the only entertaining part of that extremely overrated movie.

John Cleese of Monty Python fame is very liberal. But he has spoken out strongly against this PC nonsense. His main point is that all comedy is (or will be) offensive to someone. That’s the nature of comedy.

The original NYT review of the 1934 opening of Anything Goes, without a single reference to Ching and Ling: https://www.nytimes.com/books/98/11/29/specials/porter-anything.html.

P.S. The characters have been changed to "Luke" and "John" in most revivals since 1980, a reference to their being Chinese converts to Christianity in the musical.

“Anything Goes.”
I saw it on Broadway and the road show in Fayetteville Ar. Very good! My wife’s niece worked for the talent agency in NYC and knew the actors.

As for whites portraying other racial groups...Remember, an ACTOR is a person who makes his living by PRETENDING to be other people.

“Yet Western culture continues to see us as outsiders...”

So what? You are outsiders, just like I’d be an outsider in China or Japan. If you want to feel like another face in the crowd, go move to your ancestral homeland!

Yep, and comedy that is completely non-offensive is generally bad comedy. That’s why kids tell the lamest jokes, because parents shield them from learning “offensive” things, which eliminates most humor as well.

It simply says Thomas Lee is a SF Chronicle columnist. Did the Chronicle ask Lee to see the revamped Mikado as an art critic, is it his normal role? So as an art critic, Lee only saw ‘yellowface’ in the production?

As for his experience of “Anything Goes”,
it perfectly demonstrated this guy’s exaggerated sensitivity (i.e., inferiority syndrome).

People were enjoying the musical, the story and acting, they didn’t look around in the audience and point fingers at this one particular fragile snowflake. Give me a F%^& break. So other people should not enjoy any entertainment (movies, musicals, or other art forms) because of that one person’s hurt feelings?

And I am speaking as an Asian. Most of the Americans I encounter hardly notice my ethnicity, unless I did/said/wear something ethnically. Yep, they are mostly oblivious, as they should be.

Well, dang!
Then don’t go see any Kabuki Theater!

Or you’ll be outraged!..................

(BTW, I’m of Asian ascent and I don’t get offended by much of anything, especially comedy)................

Mikado was a satire on contemporary English society from the day it opened.

Anyone who doesn’t know that is poorly educated in the arts.
