An unspoken side effect in the Chitcongo killing field is the uncompensated cost of initial trauma care and post-operative recuperation and therapy. If the city is serious about gang-related health care cost containment, it should open free shooting ranges in the hood to improve the abysmal wounded-to-killed ratio.
It’s a practical matter of economics when one compares the individual cost of uncompensated trauma care, which can range in the $100’s of thousands, to the cost born by Cook County taxpayers for an individual pauper interment, which is around $500. It’s a fact that an increase in gang-related shooting fatalities will result in a proportionate decrease in “merely wounded” gang-related recidivism.
In addition to free gun ranges, the city should hire Range Masters and instructors, who could teach gang-bangers in the proper techniques of marksmanship, such as not shooting their stolen pistols sideways; which effective defense loads to steal during home invasions; the importance of accurate followup shots; and, focusing on center-mass bullet placement.
