Trump and Blacks (Thomas Sowell)
RCP ^ | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 08/19/2016 5:19:45 AM PDT by RoosterRedux

Who would have thought that Donald Trump, of all people, would be addressing the fact that the black community suffers the most from a breakdown of law and order? But sanity on racial issues is sufficiently rare that it must be welcomed, from whatever source it comes.

When establishment Republicans have addressed the problems of blacks at all, it has too often been in terms of what earmarked benefits can be offered in exchange for their votes. And there was very little that Republicans could offer to compete with the Democrats' whole universe of welfare state earmarks.

Law and order, however, is not an earmarked benefit for any special group. It is a policy for all that is especially needed by law-abiding blacks, who are the principal victims of those who are not law-abiding.

Education is another area where something that is needed by all segments of the population is especially needed by blacks and other low-income minorities. In other words, here again there is no need for a divisive policy of earmarked benefits, in order to attract new voters into a "big tent."

No matter what policy Republicans follow, they are not going to win a majority of the black votes this year, nor perhaps even this decade.

Nor is that necessary. Just an erosion of the Democrats' monopoly of the black votes can benefit both Republicans and the black community, who are currently taken for granted by the Democrats. Republicans may also get more white votes if they are no longer seen by some as racists.

The reason the Donald is winning blacks over is because he is talking to them as people instead of a commodity.

Sowell still has a bee in his bonnet about Trump.

But Trump has always been a decent man of all colors of people, from his good works in NYC and hiring in his company to forcing the integration of his country club, from when he opened it, in FL.

Sowell commits the error of homogenization.

There are no “blacks”. Rather, there are numerous subcultures of people that have black skin. a very large subculture of those with black skin are the urban poor that have consciously made the decision not to participate, to drop out of America.

These people are used to represent all people with black skin. That is a conscious political gambit to develop racial bonds with those not in the subculture and convince them that their very lives depend on the unity.

Not such a good article by Mr Sowell.

He says some correct things, but doesn't give Trump enough credit for just how revolutionary his speech was. No R politician has ever had the guts to say what he said, nor the standing, particularly since it was the speech that needed to be given for decades.

Light slowly dawns for Thomas Sowell. He is such a precise and mannerly person that his sensibilities were outraged by Trump’s blunt truths delivered with neither equivocation, political correctness nor false dignity. I am glad to see the truths are slowly overcoming Sowell’s affront at Trump’s unseemliness. After all sometimes it takes a hammer to do the job.

In addition to “law and order,” Trump has also strongly addressed school choice - thus reaching out to the black community in exactly the manner mentioned by Dr. Sowell.

Yes he has. He was a contributor of the infamous “Against Trump” issue NRO released last year. Even up until the dropout of Jeb, he was arguing for the “next best RINO” alternative and all that - very much opposed to Trump I would say.

But it seems his decrease in popularity Americans who have been aligned with conservative principles, yet oriented more to a bit of populist nationalist has decreased. Perhaps this caused him to reflect just what his ideals and thinking could actually accomplish with the “status quo” GOPe.

Alternatively, perhaps on reflecting he’s taken a hard look at race and politics and politicians and party and made the determine that maybe something other than pandering for black votes might be needed. Hence, the black parents with children thinking - education, substantive fundamental change in the community that lasts beyond the 4 year election cycles. He hit the nail on the head with the statement to the effect that “the NAACP is not the OWNER of the black vote.....” Neither is Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and all the rest black racist puppeteers on TV and in the media.

If Dr. Sowell - who I generally admire greatly - knew anything about Trump, he’d know that he’s ALWAYS been a law and order guy. For years, he’s spoken out on crime issues that occur in the Big Apple. He incurred the wrath of little boy blue, Ken Burns, with his strident support of policing.

I’m really shocked at conservatives’ knowledge base on Trump.

Sowell, whom never really impressed me much, has been outed as an Establishment shill through this. His opinion is what the Establishment tells him it is. Nothing he says about Trump will be fair and objective and uncontrived. In a word, Sowell is a phony.

Are we talking about the same Thomas Sowell?

Have you read anything significant the man has written? If not, I’d like to suggest:

The Vision of the Anointed: Self-Congratulation as a Basis for Social Policy
https://www.amazon.com/Vision-Anointed-Self-Congratulation-Social-Policy/dp/046508995X

It is still as perfectly valid in its critique of the Left as it was when it was written 20 years ago.
