Parole denied for the 9th time for John Lennon’s killer

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — John Lennon’s killer will remain behind bars after being denied parole for the ninth time.

The New York state Board of Parole on Monday announced that it has again denied parole to Mark David Chapman, who on Dec. 8, 1980, shot and killed the former Beatle outside his luxury Manhattan apartment.

The 61-year-old Chapman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and is serving a sentence of 20-years to life in Wende Correctional Facility in western New York.

In a description of its decision, the parole board noted that Chapman has since described the murder as “selfish and evil.” The board concluded that the factors supporting Chapman’s parole were outweighed by the premediated and “celebrity-seeking” nature of the crime.

“Your release would be incompatible with the welfare of society and would so deprecate that seriousness of the crime as to undermine respect for the law,” the board wrote.

So try to kill a Republican president and get paroled but, kill a socialist progressive icon entertainer and no chance of getting out.

It’s not unusual for a schizophrenic to avoid using medication. IIRC, it is illegal in this country to force someone to take medication. I don’t know about Canada.

“celebrity-seeking” nature of the crime.

What about the celebrity factor in granting parole?

Denied parole 9 times? Let’s make it 20 times.

When I have free time I always pay at least a quick visit to Central Park when I visit NYC.On my visits to the memorial across from The Dakota there’s always at least a few people there and usually quite a few.

But the guy who shot Reagan is released and running free in Virginia.

He was found not guilty by reason of insanity. In that situation the doctors treating him in the psych hospital can,IIRC,cause his release by declaring him "cured" or "no longer a danger to himself or others".

I doubt it. John’s killer came from Hawaii to murder him...he could just as easily have found him in England. I am honestly surprised that Chapman survived in prison, given the popularity of who he slaughtered. Poor John.

Sure, he could have found him in England. But, it would have been another step in the way. Dunno, how easy it would have been for him to find a gun in England. He could have used any other tool. John should have been deported long ago.

It's a travesty of justice that he even comes up before a parole board.  Here's my thought.

When the folks they killed get a parole, the perp can have one.

36 years in prison in New York State is extremely long - he may be one of less than a handful of 1980 murders serving past the 25 year minimum.

Where is Amnesty International on this American political prisoner. Oh, yes they are heavily $upported by Yoko Ono, so they look the other way.

I like the way the way they handle insanity pleas in the state of Georgia: guilty but mentally il. The defendant is sentenced to time in the state mental hospital. If he or she is successfully treated and is no longer mentally ill, then the send ant is transferred to a regular prison to serve out the sentence.
