California Just Passed A $1 Billion Tax On The Whole Country That No One Noticed
zero hedge ^ | 9/2/16 | Tyler Durden

The California State Assembly recently passed a bill that received minimal recognition by the press, outside of the state, but has substantial negative consequences for basically everyone in the country. Once signed by Jerry Brown, the bill, known as AB 1066, will make California the only state in the entire country to provide overtime wages to ag workers after 8 hours a day or 40 hours per week. This change will add about $1BN annually to the cost of growing food in California which will ultimately be passed along to consumers. And since eating isn't really optional, this is effectively a $1BN tax that California has decided to levy on the entire country. Worse yet, increasing food prices is essentially the most regressive form of "tax" possible given the disproportionate share of wages spent on food by low-income families. And, while you may not know it, California is an agricultural powerhouse that produces roughly 1/3 of all vegetables consumed in this country and 2/3s of the fruits and nuts.

Now, we know what you're thinking...why would everyone be entitled to overtime pay at 40 hours per week except farm workers? Well, there is logic behind the exclusion and it has to do with the seasonality of farming. Unlike most industries, farmers are not able to spread their labor needs throughout the year due to harvest schedules and the perishable nature of their crops. But farm workers aren't the only ones excluded from overtime pay. In fact, California has established special overtime rules for hourly workers in a number of other highly-seasonal sectors, including firefighters, actors and ski-resort employees, to name a few.

As you can see from the chart below, the total number of people working in the ag industry in California spikes by about 33% starting in May every

I live in Montana and have a nice outside garden.

A greenhouse is too expensive in the winter...

Grow tent:

Grow lights (buy two):

Look up aquaculture.

My 5’ x 5’ tent provides us with Kale, Chard, lettuce, Napa cabbage, Jalapenos, Serrano’s and other veggies (NO dope!).

It’s not that hard...

OH, you need nutrients:

It's not yours to give, besides this site is hosted in CA.

And there's lots of good Freepers that live here.

Actually, that will make agriculture in other States more profitable, cutting jobs in California. Oh, and from an ultra-green/liberal perspective, that will also cut the wasteful use of water for agriculture and allow more of it to be used for the direct human consumption.

This isn't so much a tax on the rest of the Country as a readjustment of where things will be grown.

California is driving away businesses, jobs, and ultimately people with is regulations and its taxes. They are killing the golden goose.

I left California ten years ago and re-settled in West Virginia. Best decision I ever made. I just couldn`t stand the liberal lunacy ( I know, redundant) crime, traffic, etc. California is waaay over-rated IMHO

FWIW, we've started eating a lot less lettuce and a lot more cabbage. Not only does cabbage have a higher nutritional value, it can be grown locally and for a lot cheaper than lettuce.

PA also grows superb peaches and apples in the Chambersburg-Gettysburg area. You either have to find a farmer's market close in SW PA which sells them or drive over. Most of the crop is sold to higher bidders along the densely populated I-95 corridor.

Believe it or not, most of our local supermarkets sell fruit trucked in from the west coast, except the citrus which comes from Florida or Texas.

I try to buy American grown food but ultimately, if you have to buy from Mexico or Canada or worse, you’ll do it...

Greenhouses in Canada of all places can compete with California now.

A lot of the tomatoes that I've bought recently were labeled Product of Canada. They were quite tasty too.

Buying California produce IS optional.

So, with less demand, California farming will decrease leaving more water for the Pacific Ocean, and more farmers will head to welfare office.

A win-win for socialists!

No, I did read the somewhat tortured reasoning.
Does not sound like something that could withstand a challenge on 14th. Amendment grounds.

Now if you want to make the case that no one should get premium overtime there’s some rationale to that.

It is not possible to access the internet in any form without funding a CA company.

Without CA Companies there would be no national defense either.
