Simply put, he can sympathise with the average voter - while Hillary has nothing but contempt for ordinary people. Notice the great contrast in the way the two campaigns are conducted: Trump has large public rallies that are open to all, he's not afraid to meet those who aren't necessarily on his side (Mexican President, black churches), not afraid to meet with ordinary people in crisis (the LA floods), and he often does live interviews on TV.
And then there's Hillary ... Hillary who never has large open public rallies, every event is closed to just her select group of elitist donors (just like her hate-speech event tonight); Hillary who can't be bothered to meet with the LA flooding victims; Hillary who chooses to not accept the Mexican President's invitation; Hillary who only does pre-taped interviews, never live.
It's almost as if her campaign is deliberately trying to make her look as remote and uncaring as possible. And unfortunately for Hillary, voters do pick up on these differing styles - thus the drop in her polling numbers. Yet incredibly, after a whole month of showing this contempt for the public (August), with the resulting plunge in support, she insists on doing more of the same, isolating herself from the public as much as possible.
Voters will not elect someone who treats them with contempt. It's a simple truism, but one that Team Hillary just can't seem to grasp. If things continue on their present course, Hillary's support will continue to decline, while Trump's rises.

Or, it could be that she believes that, with the changing demographics, combined with voter fraud and rigging voting machines, it’s in the bag for her and no further effort is required.

The tape of her cackling about how she lied in the rape trial of the 12 year old girl, and got the guy off scott free with 2 months time served was the most damning. It illustrates that she has no humanity or morals. She is a soulless empty husk of a human, she is a depraved scumbag on the level of Hitler or Stalin.
