Good evening, Maestro! The 30's musicals, despite the disparagement they have received from some, stand as a high achievement of Western Civilization. The participants, of course, did not give that a moment's thought - they were having far too much fun.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

IRVING BERLIN

ON THE AVENUE

BILLIE HOLIDAY: “I’VE GOT MY LOVE TO KEEP ME WARM”

This is very early Lady Day, and she puts a different slant on the song. Catch the clarinet backing her and the sax solo in the middle.

Billie Holliday: “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm” (1937)

This 1955 recording give the song a totally different feel. It’s jazzier than the earlier version. This is what makes a song a standard, that it can thrive in so many different forms. That’s great muted trumpet playing in the middle, along with some fine clarinet and sax work, and a wicked bass line underscoring the whole thing.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

IRVING BERLIN

ON THE AVENUE

ELLA FITZGERALD & LOUIS ARMSTRONG: “I’VE GOT MY LOVE TO KEEP ME WARM”

This 1957 recording is a great jazz combo duo. They start together, Louis picks it up in the middle, then Ella picks it up, and they wrap it up together.

Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong: “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm”

It’s hard to imagine Ella doing a different approach, but in this 1958 recording she does a big band version of the song.
