President Vladimir Putin has praised farmers for making Russia’s grain harvest this year the highest in post-Soviet times.

Agriculture Minister Alexander Tkachev reported to Putin on Tuesday that this year’s harvest is expected to reach 110-115 million metric tons, the largest yield in a quarter century. […]

Putin said Russia shouldn’t hurry to boost its grain exports, but wait for global prices to rise. …

They must be letting the farmers keep most of the profits.

An old Cold-War joke:

Russia says it’s built the most sophisticated computer in the world. Premier invites American scientists, tells them to ask it anything about Russia. American scientist knows wheat harvest will be horrible this year, types in, “what is the expected grain harvest this year?” Computer replies, “yes, but what about the way you treat your blacks?”

Russia should not export any grain but store it now; they will need it later.

Why?

Because the magnetic north pole has shifted to just off the Siberian coastline. That means ice will begin to build and the climate will grow colder.

Now imagine that.

A leader who praises, rather than denigrates his people for their productivity.

Must be a totalitarian.

There was actually a grain shortage every year starting in the 1960s until the collapse. Russia had to trade it’s vast raw materials wealth for basic food stuffs and by the late 80s the trade ballance was so large they where weeks away from mass starvation which is why the USSR collapsed.

Or the fact Russia has recovered from the massive grass fires that destroyed many wheat fields a couple of years ago. And Putin very well knows that western Europe is dependent on Russian wheat like the Europeans are dependent on Russian natural gas.

Well, as long as he doesn’t start demonizing them and praises them, then he is not as bad as Stalin or Lenin...

The Black Sea region is one of the great breadbaskets of the world, along with the American midwest and the north China plain. The Greeks and Romans ran grain ships into the Black Sea. The only times in history that the region didn’t produce an exportable surplus were when the Mongols rolled through and killed everyone, and when the communists ran it on the basis of collectivization.

Or he’s prepping the country for the war that Obama is pushing us into in Sryia. Russia will use nukes if they’re are losing conventionally.

When has any president praised the farmers and ranchers who feed not only our country but much of the world? I can’t remember ever hearing it.

Tsarist Russia exported wheat. Soviet Russia had to import wheat. And now Russia once again exports wheat. There is a lesson there.

What a big change from the Cold War when the US had to ship grain to the Soviets.

However, the Soviets loosed up the strict collectivization rules by the middle 1950's given the BAD experience of what happened in 1928-1934. That's why Nikita Khrushchev privately told Mao Zedong to stop the Great Leap Forward in 1959 and in fact pulled out 15,000 Soviet advisers out of China in 1960 because Mao wouldn't take Khrushchev's advice.

Wasn’t the first time the USSR had to back off collectivization. Lenin’s New Economic Policy was the first, and one of the first instances of “state capitalism” that spawned the kind of corporatism that in turn spawned fascism.
