WASHINGTON – The Army said Friday it has determined that suicide was the cause of death of a two-star general who was found dead in his home on a military base in Alabama.
Maj. Gen. John Rossi was found dead July 31 at Redstone Arsenal, two days before he was to assume command of Army Space and Missile Defense Command.

This suicide is more mysterious than that of Adm. Jeremy Boorda in 1996.
My wife had a colleague in the Army with “everything going for her”; new promotion & fiance, but chose to take her own life in her brand new car in a closed garage with the engine running, the day before she was to report to advanced career school.
Clinical depression was the only possible explanation.
Right! If any general would have a stable personality, it’s one charge of the strategic missile command.

Rossi was respected in both the Air Defense and Field Artillery communities. He just took a three star billet and hadn’t even took command. There is no logical reason why the “powers that be” would position someone to take a job, then kill him before his first day. It passes neither the smell test, nor Occams Razor.
Over 32 years of active and Nat’l Guard service several Soldiers or peers from my assignments and commands (and a family member) have contemplated, attempted, or committed suicide. Some are explainable (divorce) some with no reason we could see (a 15 year veteran SFC, with a loving family, OD’d not even half way through a Korea tour, another guy shot himself in a latrine the week before he was suppposed to redeploy from Iraq).
It is a real problem, and we don’t need this crap from people who should know better. Soldiers are human beings, show some freaking respect toward a dead comrade in arms.

I’ve heard people say they had contemplated suicide simply because so many “little” things piled up they didn’t know what to do.
The human psyche is a weird thing.
