President-elect Donald Trump has said UKIP leader Nigel Farage would make a good British ambassador to the US.
Mr. Trump said 'many people' would like to see Mr. Farage as ambassador and he would do a 'great job".
Mr. Farage, who helped Mr. Trump during his U.S. presidential election campaign, said the suggestion has come as a "bolt from the blue", adding: "If I could help the UK in any way I would."
But No 10 rejected the suggestion, saying "there is no vacancy".
Mr. Trump tweeted: "Many people would like to see @Nigel_Farage represent Great Britain as their Ambassador to the United States. He would do a great job!"
Mr. Farage, who is UKIP's interim leader, was the first British politician to meet him after his victory, and said there was a "real opportunity" for improved UK trade with the US......
He said: "It's all a bit of a shock to me. No one had mentioned the idea to me but I have good relations with his team and if I could help the UK in any way I would."
Mr. Farage said he had good relations with Mr. Trump and his team and urged Mrs. May to take advantage of that....
A Downing Street spokesman said: "There is no vacancy. We have an excellent ambassador to the US."
BBC assistant political editor Norman Smith said he understood that Downing Street was adamant there would be no role for Mr. Farage.

I believe I see things clearly and I see opposite of what you say. Ambassador is an extension of government. He must say what government says. If Trump wants to have Farage close to him he should give him some White House job, but the ambassador from Britain must be someone who speaks for Theresa May. Otherwise he is an ambassador of nothing.
Hence we have definitive evidence that Prime Minister Theresa May is not serious about Brexit since she is unwilling to appoint its most powerful spokesman and promoter as her ambassador to the USA.
He’s needed in the UK to get Article 50 going, so they can make Britain great again.
Maybe we could hire him to be our ambassador to England.
Peter Hitchens has written that the trick coming out of May’s government with Article 50 may be a UK that is ‘halfway out’ of the EU instead of being ‘halfway in’ like it is now.
In other words, an illusory process that will keep the UK in the EU ‘economic zone’ preventing the US and UK from developing the close trade ties Donald Trump envisions.
Trump needs to make sure Brexit is real and it sticks, so I think he is pushing Farage’s profile right now to prod the UK in the right direction.
Farage needs to be a free agent - which he wouldn’t be as Ambassador.
This is a very nicely judged compliment from President Trump, though.
I recommend it to anyone who loves to see a man totally in command of the English language.
That cut them to the bone
President Trump should grant Nigel U.S. citizenship and then appoint Nigel as U.S. Ambassador to the U.K.
Ha! Half of the Brits absolutely detest the man.
The Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary have said otherwise.
Countries can refuse to accept the credentials of a foreign country's ambassador but that's about it.
Nigel Farage is a warrior and should be Man of the Year.
He is a great man with a great message for all of us to listen to.
“Half of the Brits absolutely detest the man”
Trump can relate.
