Trump picks Elaine Chao for transportation secretary
CNN ^ | 11/29/2016 | Phil Mattingly

Posted on 11/29/2016 8:22:31 AM PST by usafa92

(CNN)President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Elaine Chao, the former labor secretary and wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, to be his choice for transportation secretary, an official briefed on the matter told CNN on Tuesday.

The announcement is expected to come this afternoon. Chao served as secretary of labor under President George W. Bush from 2001 through 2009 -- the longest tenure in the position since World War II -- and has been married to McConnell since 1993. She was the first Asian-American woman to serve in a Cabinet position.

Chao also served as the deputy secretary of transportation under President George H.W. Bush from 1989 to 1991. Following her time in government, Chao has held a position as a distinguished fellow at the Heritage Foundation in addition to conducting media appearances.

At the Transportation Department, Chao would have a key role in helping Trump get an infrastructure spending bill passed through Congress and start government-backed works projects -- a role likely to be complicated by her relationship with McConnell, who will also be a critical player in any infrastructure bill negotiations.

So how about we base our thinking going forward on facts rather then continue to cling to hurt feelings left over from the Primaries?

I agree with the premise of your statement, obvious sarcasm of it aside.

So let's apply some facts and logic, shall we?

Mitch McConnell = NO FRIEND OF TRUMP.

Appointment of Chao is a SOP to McConnell (again, no friend of TRUMP.)

This smacks of BUSINESS AS USUAL, which is NOT what Trump was elected to continue.

Hurt feelings? No. Logic and reason, yes.

MNJohnnie, see what I mean?

All it takes in this brave new world of moving forward based on facts is one opinion not found to be politically correct and the stentorian screams for censorship and zotting shut down all forward motion in this brave new world.

Think Mitch will be on sunday shows saying negative things about his cabinet choices before confirmation? ???? So this neutralizes him.

I think that's the theory anyway.

Is there something wrong with school choice? That’s a conservative position.

What you say is true, and the Constitution does empower the Federal government to build “post roads”. But we got along nicely without a Department of Transportation until about 1965.

Trump is going to do another stimulus of around the same size as Obama’s. He has been pretty open about this, and it’s one of the main reasons the NeverTrumpers I know cite for not supporting him.

If the job of Transportation Secretary is that of handing out pork, I can see how Mr. and Mrs. McConnell would be all over it.

I do think Trump will spend the money far more effectively than Obama. He will solidify his support amongst blue-collar union types.

But it’s not textbook Conservatism.

Throughout the entire primary campaign Trump supporters found example after example to tell us that Ted Cruz, the man who called Mitch McConnell a liar to his face on the floor of the Senate, had sold out to the establishment but Donald Trump had not.

Very true. But Trump is the president-elect, so all Americans want him to do well.

What you say is true, but the primaries ended several months ago.

I am just a few ticks north of US 40, the old National Road, which was the first highway built and financed by the US Government.

There was a lengthy, spirited and protracted fight in Congress at the time over whether or not this was the proper role of government. It passed narrowly.

We do need to rebuild. A trillion is a LOT of money, however, and selling it as economic stimulus is decidedly not conservative (or economically sound.)

If they can figure a way to get that trillion out of other parts of the Federal budget, then I think we should all be fine with the infrastructure spending.

I agree with this, but it doesn't necessarily mean that we're going to see the taxpayers foot the bill for it like they did last time. I'm hearing interesting things from Washington that suggest the a big transformation in infrastructure financing is going to be proposed by the Trump administration. Wall Street is probably going to play a huge role in financing infrastructure projects in the future.

Maybe that's not "textbook conservatism," but it sure doesn't sound like big-government Marxism either.
