On Thursday night (local time, as U.S. stations in Antarctica adhere to New Zealand time), the National Science Foundation agreed to provide medical evacuation from the South Pole for 86-year-old Buzz Aldrin, a former astronaut who in 1969 became one of the first people to walk on the moon.
The medical evacuation flight will be provided by the National Science Foundation, according to a news release on the government agencys website. The statement did not offer a reason for the evacuation, only referring to Aldrin as ailing.

I can see the attraction for Buzz Aldrin. About 30 years ago I met a marine biologist in New Zealand who had just "wintered over" in Antarctica (it was November, the southern spring). She enthralled me for hours with stories of Antarctica...so much so that when she was finished I told her that I wanted to go.She gave the name and address of a guy who worked for the company that staffed the non-scientific posts there.I wrote telling him I'd shovel snow...I'd do *anything* they wanted.I never heard back from him.

Damn, he just got there a day or two ago.

By the way, here’s Buzz on climate change:
“I think the climate has been changing for billions of years. If it’s warming now, it may cool off later. I’m not in favor of just taking short-term isolated situations and depleting our resources to keep our climate just the way it is today. I’m not necessarily of the school that we are causing it all, I think the world is causing it.”

“What idiot would allow an 86 year old man to go to Antarctica?”
I agree. Why would HE even think it’s a good idea.

Hes notorious for taking exotic trips on other peoples dime.Well he set a hell of a precedent in July of '69.

Alien conspiracy theorists will have a field day with this. That was my first thought but you have to admit it is interesting that he and Kerry have been there recently. Makes one wonder why.

Nicknamed by little sister who pronounced brother ‘buzzer.’

If that’s the case, I’d say he’s earned it.

My first thought, too.

What kind of parents would name their child Buzz? Is is it short for Buzzby? Nickname. His birth name is Edwin.

When I heard him speak years ago he'd just been down to the Titannic! But the fame he's leveraged is 100% earned, especially since Neil didn't wish to use his share. I'm confident many at the Pole were much more excited to have him visit than the Secretary of Treason. If folks are willing to put up their own dimes to cover the known and potential costs (unlike, say, Stein's MI recount) let them spend them. And if you have enough of the Right Stuff adjust age limits accordingly. Adm. Byrd's second in command last returned to Antarctica at age 83. Norman Vaughan, from same expedition hoped to celebrate his 100th there, but alas fell just short.

First name is actually Edwin
Which means he probably got his @ss kicked a lot, or had to kick a lot, as a kid.
Being what his reputation is as a senior, I'd say the latter.
If I was an Edwin, I'd want to be called Buzz also.

ALL those guys were a unique breed of man that just HAD to DO something !
That just doesn't go away because you actually DID something, because today is a new day to DO something.
Buzz has paid his dues and he's a life long member of "on our dime adventurers club"
Glenn went back up at a risky older age and came back down again.
