Donald Trump's phone call with Taiwan president risks China's wrath

Donald Trump looked to have sparked a potentially damaging diplomatic row with China on Friday after speaking to Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-wen on the telephone in a move experts said would anger Beijing.

The call, first reported by the Taipei Times and confirmed by the Financial Times, is thought to be the first between the leader of the island and a US president or president-elect since ties between America and Taiwan were severed in 1979, at Beijing’s behest.

The US closed its embassy in Taiwan – a democratically ruled island which Beijing considers a breakaway province – in the late 1970s following the historic rapprochement between Beijing and Washington that stemmed from Richard Nixon’s 1972 trip to China. Since then the US has adhered to the so-called “one China” principle which officially considers the independently governed island part of the same single Chinese nation as the mainland.

Trump’s transition team said Tsai, who was elected Tawain’s first female president in January, had congratulated the billionaire tycoon on his recent victory.

“During the discussion they noted the close economic, political, and security ties that exist between Taiwan and the United States,” a statement said. “President-elect Trump also congratulated President Tsai on becoming president of Taiwan earlier this year.” Beijing sought to play down the importance of the phone call, with foreign minister Wang Yi dismissing it as “just a small trick” by Taiwan.

This was a criminal act by the US government and a betrayal of our allies. All because american companies wanted access to slave labor in China.

They’re going to be pissed at this but not at Trump constantly fingering them for stealing our jobs, manipulating currency, etc. during the campaign?

China’s already been put on notice that the free ride is over. This is nothing new.

I’m surprise that Reagan or one of the Bushes never even talked to the Taiwan president. Also surprised that the communists never invaded Taiwan

My wife is from Taiwan so I have been there several times. Beautiful country and beautiful people. They love Americans and it’s a wonderful place to be a tourist. People go out of their way to help you. There is no welfare there but they help everyone. Parents are taken care of by the children. Blind people are taught trades like massage for example. Nobody litters. The trains are on time to the minute. The subway system in Taipei was finished in 3 yrs on a 4 yr timetable and under budget! Every kid wants to study hard and get their PhD. They respect elders and open doors for them. I don’t speak chinese yet have no trouble running around the countryside by myself as there is always someone offering help. It’s a breath of fresh air compared to our cities here.

China has been immensely emboldened by our faux support of “free enterprise” with a communist dictatorship in order to buy cheap goods and sell t-shirts. It is impossible to fathom the depths of American lunacy towards China policies since Nixon, the media never saw a commie they didn’t love and GOPe is so insecure in their manhood they don’t want to be left off the “Hollywood/Beautiful People” guest lists for the Social Elite party lists.

America’s natural ally in the region is now and has always been India, a legitimate democracy with English as its official language. Also has the same population demographics and in twenty years the same number of people to buy T-shirts from us. India and China are lifelong adversaries and through freedom and free enterprise relationships America could have kept the region in check without selling our soul for short term economic and political gain with the lefties.

History will remember Bipartisan collusion is selling out the last bastion of freedom in the world. May God have mercy on their souls.
