Donald Trump Targets Second Indiana Plant Over Plans to Shift to Mexico

Donald Trump took aim Friday at a second U.S. manufacturer that plans to move jobs from Indiana to Mexico, a day after he threatened consequences for business that shifted American jobs abroad.

“Rexnord of Indiana is moving to Mexico and rather viciously firing all of its 300 workers,” Mr. Trump wrote at 10:06 p.m. on Twitter. “This is happening all over our country. No more!”

Rexnord, which is based in Milwaukee, intends to move production of industrial bearings from Indianapolis to Monterrey, Mexico, according to the employee union. The move, expected by the middle of next year, would eliminate about 300 jobs.

The company, which didn’t respond to requests for comment on Thursday, couldn’t immediately be reached late Friday. Shares of Rexnord have tumbled more than 10% from Wednesday’s close.

After criticizing Carrier during his campaign, Mr. Trump on Thursday celebrated a deal with the air conditioner and furnace maker that will keep about 800 jobs in Indiana in exchange for $7 million in tax breaks. Carrier, a unit of United Technologies Corp., still plans to shift 1,300 jobs from Indiana to Mexico.

Chuck Jones, president of United Steelworkers local that represents Indianapolis workers at both Carrier and Rexnord, said Friday he was grateful for President-elect Trump’s intervention but he isn’t optimistic other companies will shelve plans to move manufacturing abroad, even if they are offered state or federal incentives.

“There’s not enough taxpayer money to reward companies not to leave the country when we’re competing with $3-an-hour wages in Mexico,” said Mr. Jones. He said Rexnord appears determined to leave and the union is negotiating over severance benefits.

Lower the corporate rate is a start.

And incentives...they work in every city and town...and the folks aren't even moving to Mexico.

Add a little surcharge to incoming goods...every other nation does it....

In other words...get rid of NAFTA.

Work separate deals with Canada and Mexico.

So over 60% of the Carrier jobs in Indiana are still going to Mexico?

A former boss served on Florida Governor Rick Scott’s advisory board. The boss told me that if a company was willing to send as few as 50 jobs to Florida, the Governor would be on the phone and send a plane to pick them up. His office would act as sales rep and take them to potential sites. I was impressed.

Trump seems to be doing the same. (Incidentally, this is anecdotal, but Florida seems to be doing pretty good on jobs. I see more and more houses being built, roads being repaired, infrastructure being built and companies moving into formerly empty buildings.)

Let’s just hope the unions don’t screw things up. There was a point in history where unions were needed, but some of them (not all) got greedy and stopped caring about the members and began running the unions like a business where only the union bosses prospered on the backs of their members.

I want made in America once again and I want a healthy and prosperous middle class but that can only happen in our people think for themselves.

“Chuck Jones, president of United Steelworkers local that represents Indianapolis workers...”

Big Labor supported Obama and his Republican enablers.

Monterrey, Mexico is home to a very modern, low cost steel mill.
This is probably the major attraction.

Then we need a very modern steel mill in PA and/or Ohio. We can do things, we can make things better and cheaper if we put our minds to it

Yes. Very much so. We need both carrots and sticks. It might get complicated, but think how much more complicated it is for the folks who are losing their jobs.

Which products use Rexnord bearings? Surely we can find that out.

To: McGavin999; All

Federal laws like OSHA, local labor laws on unemployment, workers compensation, and many others have made Unions obsolete.

The government regulated the most basic reasons for unions existence. Workers do not need unions any more.

I’m not so sure.

In any case Trump Inc. should stop building hotels overseas when that money could be better spent employing American construction workers here in the U.S.

Trumps keeping promises is GREAT.

Why is Mexico so attractive..?

No EPA, no OSHA, no minimum wage. Those are the big ones.

Nixon created EPA, Trump should whip out is Pen And Phone and do away with it.

I wish this would be reported different. What is going on bottom line is Trump telling these companies the corporate tax will be lower starting Jan 1 2017, or July 1 2017. If they stay they will being doing better and there will NOT be the incentive to move manufacturing. Suppose they lower the rate to 17% IF manufacturing and operations are located in the USA.

What the so-called "reporters" of the Corrupt News Media hate most about Donald Trump:

His puissance and his intellect, both of which tower over their mediocrity, exposing them for the intellectual dwarves that they are.

They HATE this TRUTH above all others!

The union got their members to agree to a cut in new employees wages 4 year ago when Rexnord threatened to move to Mexico. I am not in general agreement uions are needed but it worked back then
That agreement just expired
Rexnord is offering reduced retiree health benefits and $500 per person BS
Trump may not save this move but at least he will try
unlike the POS BO
