What happened to any degree of fire code enforcement? How is such a building given a certificate of occupancy?

The before fire pictures showed a number of cluttered rooms. The news reports said that the only stairs to the second floor was a makeshift arrangement of wood pallets that caught fire making any exit impossible.

I have to agree with some of the other posters on this thread — my antipathy to Millennial hipsters has become so great that I can’t even go through the motions of sympathy for the victims. They were more than likely from the same class of people who have been rioting against Trump’s election.

“What happened to any degree of fire code enforcement? How is such a building given a certificate of occupancy?”

Research a little.....They did not apply for proper permits....they had people living there that were told to tell authorities “They were artist that sometimes worked overnight”

The landlord lived there with his wife and three kids.....

RESEARCH.....

It’s easy to jot down a cute reply or clever note....

If you research you will find this is a disaster waiting to happen to a bunch of scum.

No sympathy here....Darwin at work...

That is my understanding.

I may be wrong.

I saw a news report that showed a video “walk through” of the place that appeared to be rooms of “art”, small rooms with sofas, pianos, altars, etc.

I then read articles that referenced GHOSTSHIP and went to their website.

There website has the pictures of the various rooms filled with “art”, along with the last picture of the performing group showing the “performer” in a Dalmer pose with his exposed genitals as the apex of the pose aka Podesta.

If I am in error, my apologies. As I have said on a couple of post, I am in RANT mode.

I never get drunk. Tonight is an exception. I had a few too many Amaretto shots and I just don’t give a flying FIG!!

If I get Zotted, fine.

Jim, I apologize if I have offended.

BUT SOMETIMES, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

I think we should remember.

This is about parents who have now horribly lost their children. These kids were redeemable. I only pray I don’t lose mine like this.

Pray for the grieving widows and comfort the weeping parents. That is how you please god.

It was actually a block building with a wooden floor and roof. The structural members were steel. Go look at the pictures, they had broken down pallets and decorated everything with the wood. The place was a maze of rabbit warren walkthroughs. The wood and other object could not be arraigned better to support combustion. I can only imagine how quickly the place was engulfed in an inferno. A boy scout could not have constructed a better fire, all that super dry fuel with much exposure to oxygen. The place was a deathtrap.

I agree with you. I am especially sad for their parents. My youngest daughter has always been enamored of the alternative lifestyle. She has tattoos and a couple of piercings and went to raves in her younger days. She’s 28 now and is married, works, and pays taxes. IOW, she’s grown up, but she’s still the same sweet, sensitive soul we raised. Many of the kids killed probably would have outgrown this scene as well, so I feel badly for their families.

You didn’t offend me in the least! I feel sorry for you and I reckon you’ll feel pretty sorry for your stupidity in the morning, as is often the case with people with an alcohol problem. If not, good luck to you.

Thank you for your good wishes.

I guess having a few shots of Amaretto and getting a buzz on qualifies me as an alcoholic.

I will contact my closest AA group in the morning and begin my recovery.

Good news, I will be sober in the morning, unfortunately I fear you will be still be a judgmental, condensing, A.H.

Thank you.

I WAS one of those, back in the 90s. Art school, drugs, the whole 9 yards.

Now here I am on FR, a 44yr old mommy of 2 who sends her babies to a sweet Catholic school so that they are never LED ASTRAY the way I was.

I am only in the position I’m now in thru the mercy of God, who ever so slowly and patiently drew me out of that world.

These poor lost ones will never have the chance to live the life of peace, love and fulfillment I am blessed to have now. Their souls need our prayers!

This was a giant Darwin Award, an “Artists Collective” holding a rave concert (10X amperage draw) in an old firetrap.

I'm guessing there's thousands of illegal habitations just like this scattered throughout the Bay Area that the fire department turns a blind eye to, rental costs in legitimate housing being what it is.

Twenty five years ago, that would've been the crowd I ran around with. In fact, the tinderbox flophouse they lived in doesn't look all that different from the equally as flammable abode I called home during my college days (where we were often stoned, cigarettes unattended burning down on empty beer cans, falling to the floor).

Until they've seen it, people just don't understand how fast fires spread. They think fires move slow, like your fireplace, giving you plenty of time to grab your belongings and get out. In reality, that place in Oakland probably exploded like the Hindenburg.

Your journey is very similar to mine. I started to wake up in my twenties. I rebuilt my life and married a great wife. We brought an amazing child into the world, who’s halfway through Catholic HS. Completely different life! God is patient ;)
