They have made a LOT of boneheaded moves through the years; surprised they’re still around, actually.
My Dad always bought just about EVERYTHING there from tools to appliances to lawn mowers to clothing. I, too, in my younger years went there for appliances and a water heater and a lawn mower - it was THE place to go.
I can still hear Dad & Grandpa in my head, ‘Well Sears is where you wanna go for THAT!’ LOL!
As a kid I remember the old Sears and Roebucks catalog from the covered wagon days....
Sears’ “Wish Book” was a treasured thing in my house at Christmas time.
.
Us too. Never liked Kmart.
Well least for the time being they have great deals on appliances, I replaced all my home appliances relatively inexpensively with top line products plus purchased 2 new freezers,2nd Refrigerator and stand alone ice maker. Made one mistake and bought a Maytag dishwasher and it developed a problem just after the manufacturer warranty ran out which wound up was going to be cheaper to replace than fix. Maytag is owned now by GE which sucks...
As kids one of the highlights of the Christmas season was getting the Sears catalog so we could put together our wish lists. I still have a book on natural history with a note from my parents Christmas, 1958.
Same here. Dad bought Kenmore washers, TVs, tools, tires, DieHard batteries, water heaters. I did the same when I was setting up my first house because they were the only retailer around here with those products and I was following Dad.
Other brands began going after the consumer market with better products (Makita, Milwaukee, DeWalt) and more retail outlets opened up (tires, appliances, electronics). Then came the web. Sears was just flummoxed on how to keep up. Two Sears stores around here are gone (Mountain View & Cupertino, CA).
Up until around the early 1990s, I went there on a regular basis. Then national chains like Home Depot, Kohls, Circuit City and Best Buy start sprouting up everywhere. Sears never adapted. It was the same old store with the pushy appliance salesmen, the nerdy clothing, the lame music selections and the laborious check-out process resulting in yard long receipts for just buying a couple of items. Only the tool section made it worth a trip but in recent years, the quality of Craftsman tools started to decline as well.
Same here - grew up following my Dad down the aisles of Sears....
