CNNs Brian Stelter took his anti-Donald Trump bias to new heights Sunday during his show Reliable Souses, where he argued that the media had to start referring to the president-elect as an authoritarian. I talk to international correspondents who say to you, This is exactly what authoritarians do. This is what strongmen do. This is what happens in authoritarian regimes, he claimed, I think we need to start using those words on TV, at least, to discuss the possibilities before us.
What you do in an authoritarian regime is you delegitimize the press, he continued, as he asked former Fortune editor John Huey if he could see Trump cracking down on the press. Huey agreed and said that Trump practices the classic techniques of a demagogue. And according to him, one of the techniques is to create the idea that someone out there is the enemy.
And he started with Mexicans, he moved to Muslims, and sometime in the middle of the summer he really started to focus on the media, Huey explained, while praising Stelter for being, one of the first people to pick up on that. Come to think of it, Hillary Clintons claim that Trumps supporters were a basket of deplorables falls into that narrative.
Huey continued to smear Trump by surmising that, So these are demagogic techniques and you can look at them very seriously because they do smack of authoritarianism. He went on to mock Trump reminding that panel This is the first president-elect we've ever had who is in the Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame. So there are elements of promotion here.
The CNN host had George Washington University professor and former CNN Washington Bureau Chief, Frank Senso, on the program where Stelter inquired,

Curls are for girls
Well, if they call Trump a Strongman, we should call Obama a Weakman...
As to what Moo was screaming at Bammy about, I have no idea. Looks like she sure told him though...
And what difference will it make what these scumbags call Trump no one cares about the media.
He’s a strongman because he answered a telephone call??
The media is already preparing its 24/7 assault. This will be like nothing we have ever seen. They will use every means at their disposal to trash him.
They have already started.
Daddy’s home. What a weak bunch of wussies so many Americans became under Obama. Behaviour is modelled. Can you imagine if Hilldawg won?
Good idea!
These propagandists must think were stupid. Dont they realize that when we watch a speech, interview, debate, etc. with our own eyes and then watch them (with unbridled hatred for Trump and Republicans) lie, distort, and spin what we just saw, it only destroys their own credibility?
During this election CNN and most of the media decided to toss away any last shreds of credibility, objectivity, and professionalism. They made that choice themselves. Trump didnt force that on them. They could have tried to act like actual reporters. Instead, in addition to their blatant biases, we now have dozens of Wikileak emails illustrating the unethical collusion between the press and the Clinton campaign.
All Trump did was to voice the disgust that regular Americans already had for our mainstream journalists devoting themselves so openly to partisan propagandizingsomething theyve done for decades, but dived into more deeply once they made it their top priority to try to take Trump down. I have (and have long had) no respect for most of these people. They do not deserve it. What they do deserve is a check from the DNC for their good work on behalf of the party.
START?!
“Perhaps someone should read them the story of the boy who cried wolf...and then explain it to them in painstaking detail.”
Nah, let them self-destruct. They’ve gone so overboard with their Trump hating frenzy, they’re hurting themselves more than him at this point. The media’s trustworthy numbers are already in the dumps with Repubs and Indies. 14% of Republicans trust the press. Perhaps, if the press keeps this up, they may push that number down to 4%.
He’s not even POTUS. These people have serious Trump derangement syndrome.
>>Nah, let them self-destruct. Theyve gone so overboard with their Trump hating frenzy, theyre hurting themselves more than him at this point.
I actually agree with the Founding Fathers that a free press is essential to liberty. I’d rather see them reform themselves than fall into the corruption of two separate echo chambers that the people of each competing ideology can listen to and only hear that they are right and the others are wrong 100% of the time.
. . . and that is precisely what has happened. We have an authoritarian system, and the press, - which is not supposed to be a monopoly but is one under the aegis of the AP - has delegitimated itself.
With that horrible Crossfit form, whole body hitch.
And I believe 0bama should be called a “radical leftist, communist, closeted-gay, @n@l receiver.”
He needs him some “Reggie Lovin’.”
He’s authoritarian because he calls out the lying propaganda press on their lies? Oh the horror!
If Trump continues to micromanage the economy, he will give them ammunition they don’t deserve. Let Carrier and Ford go. Make America THE place to start a company and they will get their asses kicked by the companies that stay and will see their profits drop as Americans choose quality American products without the sticker shock.
CNNs Brian Stelter demonstrated his leftist leaning and Democrat playbook with his name calling. He surely has a disordered mind and a limited arsenal, as do the Democrats. Name calling, blaming, character assassination, lack of common sense, and lack of respect for the forgotten man, and others in "flyover" country are predictable, and tedious tactics. Boring.
I don’t think our current crop of “reporters” are capable of reaching the ideal of being an objective press that appeals to all people. We need to get these current, discredited propagandists shunted to the side as much as possible and hope that a better, more ethical group of people arise in the future.
What I fear more than what they are doing now is their putting on the pretense of objectivity, while still subtly acting in a very partisan and one-sided manner, like they so often did in the past. It’s a lot easier for them to trick people that way than when they are blatant with their spin.
