Reflections on the Oakland Warehouse Fire
American Thinker ^ | December 7, 2016 | Joseph Nicolello

As the nation mourns the tragedy of the dozens who perished in the Oakland Warehouse Fire, it is time logic is addressed as well.

When I was in my early twenties, I went to several such parties. Not raves, but more like shows and readings from books, have a couple of beers. There was no thought involved, for the cities and the parties I attended, the people I met, were the main thing. To an extent it was well worth throwing caution to the wind, far away from a stagnant hometown, in order to meet a fellow artist.

Then one day I had a revelation of what would ever happen if indeed a fire broke out.

I mentioned this to the sort of man in this confessional video published recently – and I was laughed out of the room.

These people did not even have fire extinguishers on hand.

That is psychotic.

There are places like this Oakland Warehouse all over America. Places with neither window nor fire escape. Drugs rampant. Cigarettes and spliffs abound. Ashes.

Inquiry into sprinklers or fire extinguishers or emergency exits will get you laughed out of the room.

It is this attitude that killed those poor people. We must, as a people, never let artistic integrity transcend the real safety of the people attending these warehouses.

He is likely to say he was providing a Safe Space. This is doublespeak. Stupidity and an apology does not save the fool who gets into his car drunk and runs over children walking home from school. Ideological safety must be treated with equal sincerity for the physical safety of these sorts of artistic havens. This applies to housing as well.

How did the fire start and how did everyone get to the 2nd floor if there were no stairs, only piles of pallets?

The day I went there to retrieve my daughter’s trailer, when we arrived at Eight Mile road, we were confronted with five lines of vehicles (that stretched out on to the dry lake bed as far as you could see) being winnowed down to one lane so that they could drive at the posted speed limit (25 mph) of the town of Gerlach (pop. 208) to exit.
We were told to go to 12-Mile road which was the “service entrance.” when we got to the entry post, we were disposed to wait for a Burning Man Ranger, who would escort us to our daughter’s campsite (at 5 mph). Now, the “ranger” who’s name was “Ranger Coyote” was a “lifer” who told us he’d been a “burner” for 14 years, driving an aging Toyota LandCruiser. On the way to the campsite, he picked up a bare-breasted young woman who needed help finding her lost bicycle, but he did manage to get us where we needed to go nonetheless. After we got everything loaded “Ranger Coyote” came back by and since we would have had to go to the back of the long line at 8-Mile road, he took us back to the 12-mile road exit and had the “guards” allow us to leave by that route. Long story short, we were back in the SF Bay Area in about seven hours. The rest of my daughter’s group, all of whom had already left via the normal exit took 32 hours to get back their various places in the SF Bay Area.
BTW, there were dozens of high-end trailers and motor homes billeted in one area for the owners to reclaim later in the week

You must be very relieved your daughter chose not to attend the Ghost Ship party.

I feel bad for the innocent people who died in this fire but as to the rest who knowingly endangered their own safety and the safety of others?

No great loss.

Of course, the City of Oakland has a huge city staff and bureaucrats galore, but they don’t actually do anything. And this is the result.

The fire chief, Theresa Reed, makes over $300K/year, but is real busy working on diversity issues, attending NAACP events and stuff like that... so she probably doesn't have time for fire safety.

The city of Oakland pays more per year in debt service alone than it collects from all property taxes.

It seems that the whole purpose of the city government is to enrich the bureaucrats.

The fire department should have condemned that building, what were they thinking turning a blind eye to this obvious hippie apartment which never should have allowed any occupancy.

FANG’S aunt by marriage (96 yrs. old) has always lived just
as she liked no matter who it harelipped. Not that she was
“immoral” - didn’t exactly approve of the “gay” stuff; but
wouldn’t have said anything intolerant of it either if any
of her artsy-fartsy friends were into that lifestyle.

I’ve never known her to be anything but a mostly selfish
self-absorbed, self-important “artist” head and shoulders
above the rest of us. Since FANG’S uncle died 17 yrs. ago,
we haven’t spent a lot of time in that dynamic. For one
thing, we’re getting older ourselves and don’t travel a
lot. I think we only vaguely are sort of familiar to her.
- She (and her son) have been pretty much “difficult” to
put it mildly.

“You must be very relieved your daughter chose not to attend the Ghost Ship party.”

She would not have gone there, but she’s involved in music and at least one of the deceased was a singer that she knew. That sort of thing is always a parents nightmare, and even though she’s now 32, she’s still our daughter and will remain so for as long as we live.

Ha. Maybe I should get one of my 4x4s out of mothballs and volunteer for “ranger” duty at the next Burning Man...

...or maybe not...

Oakland has sadly gone the way of places like Detroit when it comes to leadership. I can remember living there right after WWI ended and my father returned from four years in Australia with the US Navy. It was a very nice city with a long line of Republican mayors. Unfortunately, like Detroit it has suffered from RAT and Black RAT Mayors since the term of Republican Mayor John H. Reading ended in 1973. He was followed by Lionel Wilson, a black RAT former superior court judge, then Elihu Harris, a Black RAT, then our ubiquitous Governor Jerry Brown had his turn in between his two 8 year stints as our governor, followed by Black RAT Communist, Ron Dellums, who left his congressional to become mayor, later still Jean Quan a Chinese Commuinist, and Now Libby Schaaf who is a Capo. With this kind of “leadership” is it any wonder what happened?

The TV day ended early, not because of concerns for family life, but because of limited technology.

You got THAT from the article you cited?

I'm willing to accept the idea, but I didn't see it in that article.

Technology or not, the conditioning element was strong in the 50's and 60's ... the subliminal seduction of the drive-in cartoon/commercials notwithstanding, e.g.

Why do they desire to live in such an expensive city? If they lived in a small town in middle America, they would at least be able to live more comfortably on their income - and we’d have a better chance at bringing them to God and to real values.
