HOUSE GOP EYES FOOD STAMP OVERHAUL, POSSIBLE REQUIREMENTS

WASHINGTON (AP) -- House Republicans are laying the groundwork for a fresh effort to overhaul the food stamp program during Donald Trump's presidency, with the possibility of new work and eligibility requirements for millions of people.

The GOP majority on the House Agriculture Committee released a two-year review of the program on Wednesday that stops short of making specific policy recommendations, but hints at areas where Republicans could focus: strengthening work requirements and perhaps issuing new ones, tightening some eligibility requirements or providing new incentives to encourage food stamp recipients to buy healthier foods.

Why wasn’t Michelle on board for requiring that food stamps be used only for nutritious food? It would have fit right in with her garden, school lunches, etc.

States have rules about purchases that vary widely. I thought states like California and New York had almost no restrictions. And some cash welfare is distributed by EBT cards with no restriction on purchases at all.

I also wonder about the orcas with the EBT cards having fancy fake nails-they all seem to have those-like it is an obsession of some kind-and they are all wearing designer Calvin Swine jeans-makes me grit my teeth, since I wear non-fancy label jeans to work every day-and buy them online for $10.00 per pair...

The real political support for the Food Stamp program comes from Kraft, Heinz, Birdseye, Frito Lay, Little Debbie, Hormel, Campbells, Coke, Pepsi, Giant Eagle, Walmart, Piggly Wiggly, Albertsons, Publix, etc. etc. etc. etc.

It is really more about Crony Capitalism much more than poor people. Moochelle wouldn’t have dared take on that crowd.

Hold on pardner! To many of us, beer is food, and a six-pack is a six course meal. lol, I agree that beer should not be bought with an EBT card.

Most people when they think of food stamps think of one of three things. That being fraud, poor people, or poor people defrauding the government. However this program has some very deep and interesting tentacles. Think about this for a moment. Over $14,000,000,000.00 worth of food sold at Wal-Mart annually is purchased with food stamps. You don’t think Wal-Mart has something to lose in this reform? Then we have to talk about the administrators of the EBT cards who pushed through a provision in the school lunch bill signed by Obama that all food and welfare “entitlements” shall be done by EBT card by October 1, 2020. The three companies who have the lion’s share of this electronic market are JPMorgan Chase, Xerox, and eFunds which is a subsidiary of Fidelity National Information Systems.

Just how lucrative JP Morgan’s EBT state contracts are is hard to say, because total national data on EBT contracts are not reported. But thanks to a combination of public-records requests and contracts that are available online, here’s what we do know: 18 of the 24 states JP Morgan handles have been contracted to pay the bank up to $560,492,596.02 since 2004. Since 2007, Florida has been contracted to pay JP Morgan $90,351,202.22. Pennsylvania’s seven-year contract totaled $112,541,823.27. New York’s seven-year contract totaled $126,394,917. Hardly chump change by any stretch of the imagination.

Which leads me to my ultimate point. There are many “players” in this game and not all of them that have a significant amount to lose are the poor.

You should investigate Catholic Charities' resettlement of Syrian refugees before you embrace that idea.

Put my narrow-eyed northern Baptist aunties in charge of it and boy, no one would slip by.

You’ve given an excellent dissertation on WHY Trump does not want lobbyists in his administration.

I thought the only restriction in NY is soft drinks larger than 24 ozs.

(just kidding, poking fun at former Mayor Bloomberg)

Spam ain’t cheap, neither is powdered milk and eggs are cheap. The trouble is people don’t know how to cook anymore. Pork steaks are around $1.50 a pound, chicken leg quarters @.99 a pound. Search the after fresh date frozen bin for meats and get all kind of good deals.

No meats or sea food items that are priced above a threshold, say $8/lb, should be eligible for purchase with food stamps.

I'd cut that in half.

SPAM, SPAM, SPAM...I love SPAM, but it’s not that cheap. Allow them a generic pork loaf for half the cost.

I’m not on food stamps, and can’t recall ever paying $8/lb for meat or seafood.

If we have to have government food programs they should be rationally needs tested, i.e. not testing whether they need money, whether they need calories! Record their height and weight. Those too fat get put on the diet plan: fewer calories and Moochelle’s menu. Bods AND enrollment will shrink. Orcas that don’t shrink get cut further or cut off. Weigh the whole family so orcas can’t eat the kids rations.

You can’t buy alcoholic or tobacco products with an EBT card

There is a 2012 federal prohibition on EBT use (TANF) in "liquor stores", but none AFAIK, on purchasing beer or wine in a supermarket like we have in my state. And cash can always be withdrawn and spent however. SNAP funds can not be used on any of the above and can not be withdrawn as cash.

Looks like my state (WA) has added restrictions since I last looked.

Purchase of:

Alcohol, Tobacco, Gambling, Lottery Tickets, Adult Venues

all banned.

1st violation, fine up to $25; 2nd violation fine $50; The department shall notify, in writing, all recipients of electronic benefit cards that any violation could result in legal proceedings and forfeiture of all cash public assistance.
