DeVos vows to end Common Core at Michigan rally with Trump
Washington Examiner ^ | 12/9/16 | Gabby Morrongiello

President-elect Trump was joined by his pick for secretary of education, Betsy DeVos, at a "Thank You" rally Friday night in her home state of Michigan.

DeVos, a longtime school choice advocate and billionaire GOP donor, was tapped by Trump to head the Education Department late last month after impressing him and Vice President-elect Mike Pence with her understanding of education policy and dedication to improving public education and expanding charter schools in the Great Lake State.

On another thread, Trump says he’s not taking a wrecking ball to Obama’s accomplishments.

Here Common Core is revealed to be on it’s way out.

So Trump won’t be taking a wrecking ball to Obama’s pet projects. Those projects won’t exist in four years, but he won’t have used a wrecking ball.

LMAO

Thanks to Jeb, here in FL we will never be rid of Common Core. See, it has changed names and is now known as the NEW Sunshine State Standards. Moreover most of the School Boards at the County level (aka local control per Ms. De Vos) have also embraced the "NEW" standards and force their teachers to use them. Unless Common Core is just banned, it will never disappear.

Excellent. Common Core was the takeover of local education by the federal government.

Well this should put all the concern trolls at ease.

Though we knew this about her before , despite what Breitbart reported.

My mother was a third grade teacher for about 20 years from the late 50s to the early 70s. She would tell me that it seemed to her the quality of children was getting worse, and children were suffering from poorer nutrition primarily caused by the major increase in junk food in their diet. I agree with her, and I also don’t think the significant reduction in Gym classes has helped either.

Not knowing much about Common Core, I decided to do a little research. Here are some detailed and perhaps useful sites I found and read:

http://www.rethinkingschools.org/archive/28_02/28_02_karp.shtml

https://www.brookings.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Surprising-Conservative-Roots-of-the-Common-Core_FINAL.pdf

An early focus leading up to CC was to have students college and career ready upon graduation. This totally ignores that many young people will not go to college or have a career. In addition, many school systems have eliminated the older non college classes that could lead to a career or perhaps even a job. In my own case, 60+ years ago I had sewing, cooking, home nursing, all of which have been useful, even with my college education. Then there have been various kinds of shop courses no longer given—carpentry, machine, automobile, etc. Without training our young people for modern job needs, like computer skills, there will continue to be much underemployment even if Trump succeeds in bring manufacturing back to this country. Automation is a major issue if jobs will consist of monitoring robots.

IN the second link, Jeb Bush is identified as one of the enthusiasts for CC. CC has been a problem as parents try to help their children with their homework. The more educated parents are more capable of figuring out what needs to be done. The less educated, especially if they have to work 2 or 3 jobs to pay the rent, can give much less help to their children. In cases that I am aware of AFT affiliates have been very upset with the implementation of CC and the people hired to do it. Inadequate training was given to teachers who were then punished for failing to raise their students standardized test scores. I have no information on the NEA. One other comment I encountered was that CC was developed to replace President Bush’s No Child Left Behind, which appears to also be an unpopular failure.

One morning, the Christian radio station where I live here in Texas held a interview with Neil Bush in re: to his education software (common core related?) that I could only describe as sycophantic. It seemed to me at the time that Bush did not have much use for the folks who were interviewing him. I haven’t listened to that station since.

I believe at the time Jeb Bush was definitely pushing CC, and who knows, perhaps the family has money in the publishing side of the CC printing and distribution.

Maybe, but I kind of doubt it. If that were the case, the Florida Democrats would have been screaming bloody murder. I think that Jeb has finally crossed over to the Dark Side of the Force with his daddy who was the POTUS to put the term New World Order into the modern lexicon.

Can’t each state now outlaw Common Core on its own?

Is Jebbie Bush financially tied into Common Core with the sale of educational materials to school districts?

Actually “education” is not mentioned at all in the U.S. Constitution, but the American people think that it is.

I understand that very well. So, the fate of the department of education should be...complete elimination. Education is a states right.

You must be a public school teacher

What are you trying to say? Be careful, please. I'm a public school teacher! So please go read my about page here and try not to paint us all as LIBTARDS with that same broad brush! I have been battling the same liberal agenda in my classroom since 1990 and now, thankfully, I'm coming close to retirement.

I have said this before and probably on this thread since it's at least nine days old, now. But just getting rid of Common Core at the Federal Level isn't going to do much, especially if you're in Florida and either a teacher or have kids in the public schools there.

Common Core is sunk directly into the State Standards in Florida. Thanks, Jeb! It morphed into the "New Sunshine State Standards" and has been embraced by every individual school district in the state, especially my own here in Miami Dade County. We'll never be rid of it. Not as long as the liberals have local control.

I owe you an apology.

I responded to your use of the word "curriculum" in relation to Trump's selection of DeVoss for Sec. of Education.

No, I didn't read your home page - there was no need to

(I need a couple of hours to read and digest ... /8^) ... )

Common core was adopted by the states and the districts that accepted government money that obligated the schools to obey the government ... the schools were bought by the enemy of America (IMO .. I'm on a local school board causing all MANNER of trouble).

Common core will disappear when the school districts figure out a way to disentangle themselves from the government, which, because of what a "public school" actually is ...... is impossible.

I'd LOVE conversation (and input) with and from you

#1. No worries.

Common core will disappear when the school districts figure out a way to disentangle themselves from the government, which, because of what a "public school" actually is ...... is impossible.

99% of the School Districts in the country do NOT want to disentangle themselves from the federal government because they walk in lockstep to the liberal agendas that have ruled our country since the time of Bush #41, who was not ever a real "conservative." He was and is a Globalist just as his sons are, all of them. Almost two generations now have been under the spell of educational globalist policies and curriculums, marching in lockstep. Even the private schools. Only the Homeschoolers are seemingly immune, but even they have to be careful because in nearly all cases, they have to have a local school teacher review and sign off (ratify) the work of their children being schooled according to the state standards.

Now however, with Trump coming into power with a decidedly negative viewpoint of globalism, the local school districts MIGHT have reason to disentangle themselves from the federal government but only because they want to protect their globalist agendas. Look at the much vaunted curriculum networks in todays educational system: The International Bacchalaureate Program is a creation of the United Nations and is specifically designed to implement UN policy via our youth. The Cambridge model of education is nearly the same thing but designed for the middle school levels and later continuing into select senior highs.
