MISSOULA, Mont. - Four ski areas in western Montana have unexpectedly closed due to extreme cold and wind.
Snowbowl outside of Missoula, Discovery Ski Area near Philipsburg and Blacktail Mountain near Lakeside all closed Monday due to weather. All three areas were also closed Tuesday.
Great Divide near Helena also was closed Monday. It is closed on Tuesdays and officials said the extreme cold could impact skiing later in the week.

-10F? That is a relatively tame figure. I know plenty of people who have skied in similar temperatures. Consenting adults and all that.
Memo for media hand-wringers: If you’re skiing, there’s plenty of wind anyway so quoting wind chill figures is nonsensical at best.
I was up in Vermont last year and the temp was sub zero. One run down and I had to go into the ski shop for a balaclava face covering and googles. Otherwise it was too painful ;-)

Don’t like wind chill temps?
Harrumph! Next thing we’ll hear is you don’t like their new habit of naming every little squall that blows through. Don’t you remember Winter Storm Hildegard that dropped two inches of snow on Upper Smallville which caused Aunt Esther to slide off her driveway into her hydrangeas and little nephew Charlie to be ten minutes late for first period?
You simply have no heart!
It was otherwise, a beautiful, sunny day with about a foot of fresh powder. It was so cold that the snow "squeaked" underfoot. If you were dressed for it, it was almost enjoyable.
Mmmmm. I love that Greek desert, but it sure leaves your hands sticky.
Right -10*F isn’t bad if you are covered.
But I understood the temp was -31* around Big Sky.
Now that is chilly.
Pesky anthropogenic global chilling.
I was up early bringing a friend to the Bozeman International this morning before 4:00 AM...It was -12.
Likely colder at the top of the Bridgers or Lone Peak.
I was colder in early December but the ski slopes were not open yet.
Lot’s of fun!
Why did you put baklava on your googles?...................
Global warming. OR Putin hacked our weather system.
Don't you just hate all that global warming, that's causing all these sub zero temperatures? S/
I’ve skied in similar temperatures. It’s honestly too cold to be fun and I’m still paying the price. I believe I’ve had low level frostbite on all my fingers. Not a big deal, but my fingertips are unusually sensitive to hot and cold.
I’ve also been to ski resorts when they closed due to too much snow. More because the highway was closing.
Call Algore!
Send in his warming jets and hot air!!!
Send in Leonardo!! Hot air a plenty!
Skiers can stay warm by being aggressive on the slopes; the problems are with lift operators, and attendants, in those deep cold temps. They’re not moving as much.
Also, the machinery gets a bit cranky as well.
Re: your comment on wind chill. When one goes skiing, the actual time skiing downhill is only about 25% of the time at most — others are waiting at lift lines, riding the lift (the coldest part of the process), etc.
Wind chill definitely matters. I’ve been skiing for over 30 years.
You lucky dawg...we have a friend in Belgrade...I did a 10 mi hike this past August with her up in the Bridgers somewhere. Love it there.
- 4 now in my neck of the Montana woods. - 20 on the way.
