Yep, offer them the back of your hand at a slight distance and let the dog approach and sniff. Never move in toward their face. Instinctually they consider it a form of aggression, even if that’s not the intent.

Forcing yourself upon a dog you don’t know is asking for it. Some are good sports and play along. Some aren’t. Always approach an unfamiliar dog cautiously. Remember, they don’t know you, either. Extend your hand slowly, let them sniff it. Watch their body language. You’ll know whether or not they welcome your attention.

Yes you are correct, dogs feel very threatened when a human gets down in their face. My vet said that is the main reason that children are attacked by dogs. It is because their faces are down on the dogs level and it upsets them.
The dog’s name wasn’t Chet by any chance was it?
Teddy did give him a dog, but this one is 4 years old. I think Teddy was already room temperature by then. Must be a different dog.
IF your dog felt under threat she would have two reactions, flight or fight. So it is best to never assume your do would never bite. She might have very good reason to. Also if you watch dogs play they often nip and bite at each other especially around the mouth. What is just friendly dog play can become a serious bite if the dog thinks it is o.k. to play that way with a person. Which they will if the person initiates that play first. Which this girl did.

If this girl was stranger to the dog and they allowed her to get in the dogs face means those people are not even responsible enough to own a dog. WOW!
