Of course they did. And by mid-1861 they (along with 7 other states) held state conventions. In each, delegates were chosen, and the conventions resulted in their being signatories to formal secession documents. Here is South Carolina's formal secession ordinance:
We, the people of the State of South Carolina, in convention assembled, do declare and ordain, and it is hereby declared and ordained, That the ordinance adopted by us in convention on the twenty-third day of May, in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty-eight, whereby the Constitution of the United States of America was ratified, and also all acts and parts of acts of the General Assembly of this State ratifying amendments of the said Constitution, are hereby repealed; and that the union now subsisting between South Carolina and other States, under the name of the "United States of America," is hereby dissolved.
In each, delegates were chosen, and the conventions resulted in their being signatories to formal secession documents.
which, of course, were not recognized by the entity to which they were constitutional signatories in the first place, thus, they were not a ‘distinct nation’except in their own delusions, regardless of articles of secession not worth the paper they were written on...
The Democratic Party has been captured by the hard left. And short of a civil war that breaks their hold on it, that poses a threat to the country.
It is not a good thing for the Democrats to be controlled by leftwing extremists like in California. At some point the Republicans will wear out their welcome and the Democrats will get back into power. They better be old style Democrats.
And there you have the perfect example of a tyrannical federal government. Pretty much from that point forward, the government has increasingly restricted freedom of the states and of individuals in its never-ending quest for more power and control.
And there you have the perfect example of a tyrannical federal government.
of course, of course...those same tyrants which forced those poor, put upon troops which surrounded the entrance to Charleston to fire on hugely outgunned Fort Sumter...much like ‘tyrannical victimization’ forced Imperial Japan to attack Pearl Harbor...
your great grandfathers sowed the wind, and reaped the whirlwind...
Fort Sumter was the property of South Carolina, which was by then a member of the Confederate States of America. The CSA took pains to reach an equitable settlement concerning Ft. Sumter. Lincoln's answer was to send reinforcements; General Beauregard replied with lead once the fleet neared the entrance to Charleston Harbor because Major Anderson refused to refrain from joining any pending hostilities from the "Relief Squadron". Allowing the invading fleet to enter the harbor would have placed his troops in a crossfire, hence Bearegard fired the first shot - a shot in self-defense in response to the North's provocation.
The states entered into a voluntary union with the assumption that they could withdraw from that union. In fact, Virginia had entered the union with a written proviso that it could withdraw. One could argue for days on end as to the cause of the war: trade, states rights, slavery, etc.. However, the main reason the South fought is because it was invaded by the North.
The bottom line is that I have neither the time nor desire to litigate the war with you; especially given your reprehensible comparison of the South's self-defense to Japan's sneak attack.
Thanks again, Kaslin, for posting another good article.
It seems paleo-Conservative Dennis Prager is waking up to modern reality.
Almost.
He still uses terms like "melting pot" and "Judeo-Christian."
These are old and discredited terms and ideas to describe the founding and culture of America.
Look them up and do your research if you folks don't believe me.
Otherwise, he's right. The "Left" is an enemy to normal, Western, and modern civilization - and a lot of non-political people are finally starting to recognize that fact.
Good post. Welcome to FR.
Future elections will have no pretense about bringing us together.
Excellent observation.
Identity politics have arrived. There's no going back.

Thanks again for Demonizing the South, Mr. Liberal. Go F yourself.
No, it's not:
At least, not at first.
Great article here describing the current state of the cultural battle, not only in the US, but the world.
In addition, thank you for a very well written post.
BTTT
but it will be our first Civil War. And it is coming....
They have the judges also.
