Blue Wall Cracking: More Democratic Senators Signal Opposition to SCOTUS Filibuster

In case you hadn't noticed, the Democratic Party's left flank is running around with its hair ablaze, reflexively opposing virtually all things Trump. As is so often the case, they're escalating partisan tensions by pioneering and expanding new methods of obstructionism, then squealing like stuck pigs when Republicans retaliate in kind. Given the party base's political blood lust, many Democrats are frantically feeding the beast. But not everyone is on board with this across-the-board, scorched-earth approach. Matt wrote earlier about a new statement from Delaware Senator Chris Coons, who admitted several weeks ago that he suddenly regrets going along with Harry Reid's 'nuclear option' on the filibuster. Having been burned by his own partisan zeal, Coons has decided not to join the voices in his caucus clamoring for yet another escalation. He's not alone. Three Democrats who are up for re-election in Trump-dominated states next year have announced that they will not join the promised filibuster (see update) attempt against the president's Supreme Court nominee:

I hope you will explain that body of thought widely on FR.

McConnell and Ryan did a superb job stopping the Obama agenda in 2015-16. It was precisely b/c Obama couldn’t get his agenda enacted by law that he had to go to the illegal Executive Orders. And the courts are slow as a check; suing the president is a laborious process, but amazingly the GOP came out well - including the the courts halting the Obama Immigration EOs.

In my own view, the greatest success of 2015-16 was that, with GOP majorities in both houses, the Obamacare risk corridor slush fund was eliminated, which was pivotal in dismantling Obamacare. And the Left was powerless to stop its funding from drying up, b/c the GOP controlled the budget process. Too few people credit this critical GOP accomplishment. And Rubio was the key player.

If the confirmation hearings go well, and IF the public likes the nominee, and IF McConnell can work his magic, it may be that enough Dems - regardless of their ideology - will vote YES on cloture and NO on confirmation. Still gets us what we want while preserving the filibuster.

This is an entirely possible scenario - and the one that most GOP senators want.

He will get 60 for this nominee. Let Buzzie Ginsburg keel over or Bryercliff and you will see these leftists go spastic. That does change the court big time, then again that sellout Roberts comes to mind.

Correct on most legislation, but the Senate values its customs and traditions. Sen Coons, for example, already regrets going along with Reid on blowing up the filibuster. So there may be enough Ds - regardless of ideology - that would be content to vote YES on cloture and NO on the confirmation itself — the best of both political worlds, in their view.

IMHO this is all staged. They have room to let 6 dimoKKKRATS vote for the Justice. Manchin(sp) will probably “for” and that gives the Republicans 53 votes. They will somehow keep it under 60 votes.

They need eight. I don’t know if they will have them at first since they have to appease their base. But eventually there will be a cloture vote and Gorsuch will be confirmed.
