Variety movie critic Owen Gleiberman is calling for Hollywood to protest President Donald Trump during the Academy Awards ceremony on February 26 in Los Angeles.
In an op-ed published January 30, Gleiberman writes that given the presidential actions of the last week alone, we suddenly seem to be living in an America where every dimension of our political process, our freedom, our very perception of reality is up for grabs.
Gleibermann concedes that in recent years Oscar-night advocacy has become, more often than not, a breed of self-abrogating kitsch conforming to what Im tempted to call the Susan Sarandon Principle: The bigger the star, the more off-putting and therefore ineffective the display of high-minded compassion.
However, to Gleiberman, protesting President Trump is not about specifically policies but because Trump lacks empathy:
To watch a good movie is to feel connected to the souls of the characters its about. Thats why a movie doesnt need to be political to be a moral experience. That act of connection of empathy realigns how we feel about the world. The people who work in Hollywood may be wealthy and lucky, but to suggest that theyre simply a colony of narcissists is to radically bypass what they do. Empathy is their art, their business, their mission. Thats why, at their best, the movies they make show us a higher way of being.
What Meryl Streep was suggesting [in her anti-Trump speech at the Golden Globes] is that Trump World isnt just about a bunch of ideas she disagrees with; its about the destruction of empathy
Its a declaration of hate.

Everyone’s own perception is their own reality.
This is true.
So Hollywood’s perception is that their world is good and safe, with the $1m mortgage paid, and staff waiting, with money in the bank, and luxury at home, with $250 jeans and $1000 handbags and shoes, with someone making their beds each morning with clean sheets.
And Hollywood has no conception of my reality as a Deplorable just wanting my rent paid, and some food in the fridge, with hoping Goodwill will have a suit proper enough for me to wear to an interview for a job I want badly after 6 years unemployed.
How low? You'll be able to fit all the viewers into my living room.
Awesome! I hope every award speech turns into a screeching, frothing-at-the-mouth, political harangue that lasts for 40 minutes.
Awesome!
Law is not hate. Tolerance is not love.
I have written off the Oscars since the acceptance speech for “Hearts and Minds”. My parents heard me curse a blue streak.
“Variety movie critic Owen Gleiberman is calling for Hollywood to protest President Donald Trump during the Academy Awards ceremony on February 26 in Los Angeles. “
Wow! That will make a real difference. If these 50 IQ apes would wear pussy hats, they might take over America by next Tuesday.
SJW professional drama queens need encouragement?
It will be another meeting of the FAG mutual admiration society bravely parroting the ‘rat party line.
You’re simply story tellers.
“HOLLYWOOD is self-destructing before our eyes.”
Couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch.
Irony, from fake phony people.
Amazing.
I wasn’t going to watch. I’m still not going to watch.
Damn. Reading the headline I they were calling for a protest OF the Oscars.
I would love to see that. A bunch of creepy screamers tossing water and all sorts of other crap on all the “stars” while they walked the red carpet.
Oh well.....
Actual news would be if The Oscars had a night of praising “everything conservative”: conservative films, conservative actors, conservative actresses,...! The Left has been bashing conservatives and Republicans for so long that it’s very old, now!
I haven’t watched since 1968.
I can’t remember the last time I did. Probably the first time they insulted President Bush. Grr!
Variety movie critic Owen Gleiberman...
Well if Owen Gleiberman says to...
Who the #### is Owen Gleiberman?!?! :)
Some people may like the Oscars, celebrity-watching and all.
But who wants to watch 2-3 hours of whiney, crying, preaching, know-it-alls lecturing their audience on how bad Trump is?
Come on now. Grow up kids. Time for your bedtimes.
Seriously?
An entire industry whose sole purpose is to create fake reality is now concerned about our perception of reality.
The irony is strong with this one. Or maybe he had a break with reality long, long ago.
You have to have a grasp of reality first. You FAIL miserably.
