”Mexican Hayride” of 1944 was another Cole Porter show that ran for years on Broadway but failed to produce a hit song. But “Seven Lively Arts,” otherwise a total flop, sent a song to the Great American songbook.
You have to start with Ella. This 1956 recording features her perfect diction and her effortless way with Cole’s lyrics.

Dinah could do it all, from standard pop to jazz to the blues. She was a major figure in the Fifties. Here she’s backed by Quincy Jones.
