After a bit of clicking around (within media matters articles) beginning from the link supplied here, after a detour through wonkette (bleech) I now see that it was media matters that awarded Hoft the "prize". I'll not link to the article from 2010 where the mediaasses did so (having closed that tab already, sorry folks, ya'll can dig for the pissing match account on yur' own) but going through their rationale for just why Hoft was "the dumbest", after a while I was struck with the thought that mediaasses were projecting finding in Hoft's loose-as-a-goose style a reflection of their own constant massaging of details. They're almost as click-baity as Hoft. They read things into images and details that are not truly there -- like for example, the circled OK thumb and forefinger and "Pepe" being racist, etc. They made up that meme, and not entirely unlike them, Hoft often squints at and squeezes at details --seeing what he wants to see, then whatever truly is there (often, only slim pickings) blows it all up into clickbait headline.
Perhaps they don't like the competition, yet Hoft helps keep them occupied (is there a pun in there somewhere? a buried beneath the word "occupied" unspoken message about residence maybe?) and in business, by being one of their most favorite targets.

Personally, I think we'd do ourselves here at FR a service by keeping Hoft at arm's length (or better, yet further) away.
lol At least media matters described the announcement as having been made at the January 19th deploraball event, correctly...
some in the media missed the fact that the NPC event was just one of more than 50 DeploraBall events, and it wasn’t even the first one that took place.
