A gang member who was recently freed from jail killed his cousin and stole his car Monday then shot and killed a California police officer and wounded his partner before being wounded himself, authorities said.
Whittier Officer Keith Lane Boyer died and Officer Patrick Hazel was wounded when they answered a report of a traffic accident in the eastern Los Angeles County suburb.
A motorist pointed out the location of the car that had rear-ended his vehicle, and the officers approached the driver.
"When they get him out of the car, they go to pat him down for weapons, they can see he's got tattoos all over his face and all over his neck," county sheriff's Lt. John Corina said.
The man then pulled a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and opened fire at the officers, who were wearing bulletproof vests and shot back, Corina said.
"They walked up on the vehicle believing the motorist was in need of medical help and then they ended up in a gunfight for their lives," Sheriff Jim McDonnell said.
Whittier Police Chief Jeff Piper wept as he described Boyer as a friend of more than 25 years.

Family says Torres killed by cousin who shot Whittier officer

(FOX 11) - “We love our nephew... We just can’t believe it.”
Tears and shock from the aunt of 47-year-old Roy Torres. She didn’t want us to show her face on camera but she tells us, Torres was shot dead by his 26-year-old cousin. The known gang member and recent parolee who also killed Whittier police officer Keith Boyer just hours later.
The Sherriff’s department was called to city terrace around 5:30 Monday morning where they found Torres shot to death in his garage.
“The person who killed him happened to be his cousin from his dad’s side.” said an unidentified family member of Torres.
The woman alleges the suspect they call Mikey stole Torres’ car after the shooting and says they helped police identify him after seeing news reports.
“Once we saw the vehicle we knew that was our family member’s vehicle and we told the cops that this is the link to find the murderer.”
The family says the two men were close.

Head/face/neck tattoos often indicate MS-13 gang members in the US and Mexico - and I can see some signs off tattoos but it almost looks like they were photo-shopped out?
An aside: For the BLM/anti-LEO types, the simple fact that perps like this are not killed in one way or another by LEOS on the site where a brother officer has been murdered is strong testimony to the restraint and professionalism of our boys in blue. He has only been described by police as a 26-year old Hispanic gang member who was released early on parole less than two weeks ago. That’s it so far. The last report I read said he was in intensive care at a hospital and expected to survive.
Start filing lawsuits against the Parole Board and members and Governor.
Eventually a judge will rule a lawsuit can proceed against it and then we’ll see things change.
When the Board sees financial responsibility they will think twice about setting these cretins free.
The old ‘Overcrowding’ excuse doesn’t hold water. It’s priorities.
