Jaime French was jarred out of bed in Emerson, Manitoba early one morning this month by pounding at her front door, just yards from the U.S. border. A face peered in through the window, flanked in the darkness by others.
Outside were 16 asylum seekers, arriving at one of the first houses they saw after crossing a lightly monitored border between Canada and the United States.
"They banged pretty hard, then 'ring ring ring' the doorbell," said French, a mother of two young girls. "It was scary. That really woke me up."
The town has become the front line of an emerging political crisis that is testing Canada's will to welcome asylum seekers.
Hundreds of people, mainly from Africa but also the Middle East, are fleeing U.S. President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigrants, migrants and refugee agencies say. Many asylum seekers say Trump's election and subsequent crackdown on illegal migrants spurred their plans to head north.
Those arriving in Emerson come on foot in the dead of night, unnerving its 650 residents. Some fear the influx of unscreened migrants while others are frustrated by the cost and effort forced on the community.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is under increased pressure from the left, which wants him to let more in, and from the right, which is fearful of an increased security risk. Trudeau must tread carefully to ensure the issue does not complicate relations with Trump.
The cooling welcome in Emerson is a microcosm of growing discontent over Canadas open door policy for refugees.
Last week, an Angus Reid poll found that while 47 percent of respondents said Canada is taking in the right number of refugees, 41 percent said the number is already too high. (See the report) (here)

I notice they are not going south. Their welfare indicators are pointing north.
“It won’t take long before the Leafs get tired of the Somalian invasion. Importing Muslim Africans , what can go wrong ? “
Once the Chinese completely take over Canada they’ll get rid of the Somalians.
As their numbers grow in certain locales, the potential for a Mau-Mau like uprising/disaster increases.
There is so much wrong with this that I hardly know where to begin. What gave those "asylum seekers" (what the press calls criminals who violate border control laws) the right to demand anything from anyone? Are they so used to getting stuff given to them that they think they can just walk up to anyone an demand shelter, clothing, money, etc.? If I answered that at all it would be to yell through the door to go away or I'd call the police (while keeping the uzi handy)
There are no atheists in foxholes.
Canadians don't like the "scary" "immigrants" crossing the border from the United States. U.S. immigration policy is responsible for generating this fear in Canadians. Americans should return to their former stance on immigration so that Canadians no longer live in fear of these immigrants -- only people living on the southern U.S. border should live in fear.
47 percent of respondents said Canada is taking in the right number of refugees,...
Nah. They’re more stupid than us.
They’ll need a lot more flooding of refugees, like we did, before they elect a Trump.
We WERE that stupid for decades.
Now Canada can put it’s money where its big mouth is.
You say you're pro-immigrant? To what level? Do you support immigrants who take jobs from US workers?
They like “migrants”? Let’s build a freeway, properly fenced, directly from the Mexican border to Canada.
Enjoy!
On Foot?
Who brought these people up to the border so they could cross 'on foot' to that area?
Looking at a map - Minneapolis is around 6 hours away - by vehicle. Fargo - 2 1/2hrs. Grand Forks, ND around 1 1/2. Greyhound goes as far north in that state as Grand Forks.
Someone is getting them up there....cars, taxis, uber, walking.
My uncle was on hill 677 in Korea for the battle of Kapyong. 2PPCLI had 224 men, and the Chinese had about 10,000. We lost 11 men, they lost thousands. They die easy.
Economically they are sure trying to take over. Many folk in the west though are becoming quite wide awake.
We’ll all be pooling our warriors soon to clean up our countries.
In the dead of night? I'm going to buckle on my pistol, grab my rifle and then call 911. Don't expect me to open the door ... and don't try to break in.
Hundreds of people, mainly from Africa but also the Middle East, are fleeing U.S. President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigrants,
GOOD! Self deportation is the best kind.
U.S. immigration policy is responsible for generating this fear in Canadians......How so? Americans should return to their former stance on immigration so that Canadians no longer live in fear of these immigrants...We ARE. Reverting to the rule of Law. — only people living on the southern U.S. border should live in fear.....Why should ANY American citizen have to live in fear? The first duty of the government is to protect its borders?
Did you forget your sarcasm tag or are you really that ignorant?
“The cooling welcome in Emerson is a microcosm of growing discontent over Canadas open door policy for refugees. “
So Canadians HATE illegal immigration now, eh?
Guess it was easy to virtue signal when we were the ones absorbing all of them before they got anywhere near the 48th parallel.
This article tickles me. It’s going to be the nightmare laboratory. Canadians are ripe for being turned into a slave plantation by the people they’re importing. They have that “subject” mentality to begin with.
It’s only okay for America to be overrun with these border invaders? The snobbery is rich in Canada. Call Trudeau....he’ll assuage your fears.
“Now Canada can put its money where its big mouth is.”
With this little pimple on the Canadian a$$ of progress, Justin Trudeau, at the wheel, they’ve already “put their money where their mouth is!” He’s an Obama look alike who’s only differences are that he’s white and speaks French.
