Test meant to screen teachers instead weeded out minorities

New York education officials are poised to scrap a test designed to measure the reading and writing skills of people trying to become teachers, in part because an outsized percentage of black and Hispanic candidates were failing it.

The state Board of Regents on Monday is expected Monday to adopt a task force's recommendation of eliminating the literacy exam, known as the Academic Literacy Skills Test.

Backers of the test say eliminating it could put weak teachers in classrooms. Critics of the examination said it is redundant and a poor predictor of who will succeed as a teacher.

"We want high standards, without a doubt. Not every given test is going to get us there," said Leslie Soodak, a professor of education at Pace University who served on the task force that examined the state's teacher certification tests.

The literacy test was among four assessments introduced in the 2013-2014 school year as part of an effort to raise the level of elementary and secondary school teaching in the state.

Leaders of the education reform movement have complained for years about the caliber of students entering education schools and the quality of the instruction they receive there. A December 2016 study by the National Council on Teacher Quality found that 44 percent of the teacher preparation programs it surveyed accepted students from the bottom half of their high school classes.

The reformers believe tests like New York's Academic Literacy Skills Test can serve to weed out aspiring teachers who aren't strong students.

But the literacy test raised alarms from the beginning because just 46 percent of Hispanic test takers and 41 percent of black test takers passed it on the first try, compared with 64 percent of white candidates.

At my retarded “diverse” company there’s a few VP’s who can’t even spell right in emails.

They are the face of the company and can’t even write an email.

Using the lowest common denominator as a standard of measurement is hosing our society.

Who cares whether teachers can read?
= = =

To check their writing skills, give them a can of spray paint and a concrete block wall.

Then call in an interpreter, or hieroglyphics expert.

I bought a house from a public high school teacher who never cleaned the stove and had kitchen cabinets whose shelves were littered with mouse turds.

I’m just positive that test knows the ethnicity of those taking the test. Don’t like the results of the test, called it racist and replace it with a test that reverses the discrimination. Like tests given in Spanish & Ebonics. That will do it, and then America’s children will get the kind of education we want them to have.

When I taught AA students, they ALWAYS complained that I was using “big” words. I have an average vocabulary.

>>You can ignore the truth. But you cannot ignore the consequences of ignoring the truth.<<

Truest words ever.

This is like driving blindfolded and then being shocked when you get in an accident. Extending the analogy, the driver is the only one with seatbelts and an airbag. The passengers get maimed or killed.

So we replace the car and blindfold the driver again. Repeat as long as their is money.

Every country with an average below 90 simply does not stand a chance.

It means the bulk of their elite are probably below 100.

And many countries average below 80, with a few around 60.

What do you do with a country of 50 million where the average IQ is 75 or less? Is it even possible for them to organize as a sovereign nation? And if so...why?

i have not heard anyone mention the only 64% of white teachers passed the "literacy" test. meaning 1 out of 3 white teachers is illiterate. thats unbelievable and scary. if 1/3 of the teachers are illiterate, maybe 1/2 students are?

i went to public high school in the 60's, there want anyone teacher or student who count at least read and write. i guess thats not true now.

Please don’t let smart teachers teach our kids. It wouldn’t be fair.

I actually heard a teacher call in to a radio show where the discussion was about a current event happening at the Statehouse on that day, and the teacher said, “If I had known of this event beforehand, I could of went there and taken my class there for a field trip.”

IMHO, if a teacher, including a gym teacher, doesn’t know even basic English grammar, they have no business being at a school around our kids. That may be tough, but teachers like that man I heard on the radio show that day are setting poor examples for the students.
