Hollywood studios could be in for another year of “big-budget bombs” and increased volatility around mid-budget releases, film industry analyst Doug Creutz warned in a report this week.
As he has been warning for years, the Cowen and Co. media analyst said that film studios’ increasing reliance on tentpoles and superhero movies will contribute to a decline in per-picture box office grosses in 2017, making what once seemed like sure-fire bets on big-budget flicks a decidedly risky enterprise.
According to Deadline, Creutz says the film industry in 2017 will be “at least as difficult” as it was in 2016, when operating profits at the major studios fell 14.6 percent, even as total box office receipts inched up 2.2 percent over 2015 numbers.
That increase was due largely to inflation and the increasing cost of movie tickets, the analyst warned. And Disney — with its stable of established franchise properties like Star Wars and Marvel films — reportedly captured the lion’s share of the haul with a staggering 60.5 percent of the industry’s $4.18 billion in total operating profits.
Creutz noted that nearly three-dozen upcoming releases from major studios this year boast budgets north of $100 million, and predicted Fox and Paramount could struggle the most with offerings like War for the Planet of the Apes and Transformers: The Last Knight, respectively. He added that Disney would likely continue its dominance with a new Star Wars film and the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, while Warner Bros. could see success with Wonder Woman, Justice League and Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic Dunkirk.
The Cowen and Co. analyst has expressed skepticism for years about the major studios’ shift toward pursuing similar release strategies, or what he described as putting “more and more eggs in the franchise picture basket.”

That’s not really much of a comparison. When Gone With the Wind came out movie theaters were the only game in town. Now you can just wait a few weeks and watch it on a giant screen HDTV with theater sound in your living room. I can’t even remember the last time I saw a movie in the theater, but it’s been maybe three years?

An out of business and empty Wall Mart or JC Pennies can be turned into some other form of retail enterprise.
If you come up some other profit making use for a theater I’d sure like to know and so would people who like to buy low and sell high.

Those theatres are designed to cater to an older crowd not wanting teenage shenanigans in the theatre. The alcohol blocks that demographic out as well as the tickets being double the price. A couple drops around $50 for tix and then if food and drink is ordered it’s even more. For me the movie would have to be truly extraordinary for me to even consider that level of payout. Nothing in recent years comes to mind that would.

Would be great if the actors would just act and the story was a quality tale. Too much is CGI and/or politically driven these days. Just not appealing.
The last movie I saw in the theaters was “300.” IMDB tells me that was 11 years ago.

Makes sense. Movies don’t make as much, but franchising: just heard today that Sponge Bob has made 16 BILLION in franchising merchandise.

I have not seen any of the superhero movies in the last 15 years. I have never seen a harry Potter picture. Nothing really interests me enough to actually go to the movie house.
One of the Naked Gun movies had a bit taking place at the Oscars where they were searching for a bomb.It’s said one of the Best Picture nominees was a film that was critically acclaimed but bombed at the box office.And the winner is?
Frank Drebin opens an envelope I think, and says, “It’s the bomb”.The people who made the film I mentioned excitedly stand

In real life, some of the folks who made Naked Gun movies did the conservative leaning An American Carol.Naturally film critics hated it.
We live in a rural area, which means “rental stores” are still somewhat profitable. We actually became a member so we could watch the stuff over a couple of years old, at 50 cents for 5 nights. This winter we burned through even pretty much all of that though.
We don’t have TV or cable and haven’t since 1997, so if we’re gonna watch the TV it’s either discs or internet. And since we use our phone broadband for that, we can’t stream stuff without hitting the 40 gig monthly ceiling. So it’s youtube videos and disks, and that’s it.
Ticket prices for those are only a buck or two more. And the seats are really comfortable. And all movies are better with beer.
