How the U.S. Assassinated the Japanese Admiral Who Planned Pearl Harbor
The National Interest ^ | 04/16/2017 | Michael Peck

Some sixty-eight years before U.S. special forces killed Osama bin Laden, America conducted an assassination of another kind.

This time, the target wasn’t a terrorist. It was the Japanese admiral who planned the Pearl Harbor operation. But the motive was the same: payback for a sneak attack on the United States.

It was once considered improper for a foot soldier to attack a knight.

“He was a enemy naval officer flying in a military aircraft, on a military mission, and got shot down.”

William “Bull” Halsey issued his own unambiguous message: “TALLY HO X LET’S GET THE BASTARD.”

Critical Info provided by US Navy Security Group, NSG and superb flying, navigation/timing and air combat fire power accuracy provided by the excellent Army Air Force pilots/navigators.

Contrary to that, TOJO may have taken him out if we hadn’t if he’d have pushed for peace. It’s not an unheard of concept.

Easy peasy...Those P38’s were perfect for that theatre, espcially after Lindberg’s expert consulting.

Wow...no one mentioning the Captain Lanphier and his wingman First Lieutenant Rex T. Barber controversy/fiasco yet? Fascinating story all the way around.

Let’s not rewrite history. You hear that about Rommel too. Neither were our friends.

As I remember the story, the P-38 was the only plane available with the range to intercept Yamamoto.

After Charles Lindbergh squeezed about 30% more range out of it and adding /subtracting parts from the original design.

Or so we are told.

AFAIC, the whole secret-secret, burial at sea story is fishy.

As buddy/buddy as our elected officials are with the Saudis, I wouldn't be dumbfounded if we find out in 10 years Bin Laden lived out his days and died in a Las Vegas whorehouse.

Lindbergh did his part for the war effort, but FDR didn't want the word to get out.

The P38 didn’t have the range until Lindberg got his hands on it. Drop the RPM, increase the Boost and there were another 600+ miles in them.

I learned of it just a few years ago and read alot on the net. Wikipedia has a really good coverage under Operation Vengeance

I can picture FDR’s “GET YAMAMOTO” directive

People actually go on tours to see the site, esp where Y’s wreckage still stands, deep in the jungle

The various secondary storylines are fascinating . . . from the debate on who gets credit to the cover story concocted so the Japs wouldn’t suspect code breaking.

A true American Hero story

Oh yeah. Imagine being in a POS slow twin-engine bomber and getting pounced on by by 4 qty P-38’s with their cannon fire & .50 cals. You’d be perforated with extreme prejudice in a hurry. The planning of the mission was very clever.

I doubt the American military and public was in any mood for a negotiated settlement after Pearl Harbor

Another Yamamoto miscalculation

I do recall that there was a British thing about not attacking officers....would induce chaos etc.

I am a total war kind of guy. If you’re going to go to war, you do whatever is necessary to win. All are legitimate targets... Knights, Generals, Kings, and civilians.

>>Never heard this interesting story before.

I read the book that describes the mission and the preparation (which included Charles Lindbergh coaching the pilots on long-distance flying and over water long distance navigation) when I was a teenager in the 1970s. I don’t know if its still available, but “Get Yamamoto” is a good read.

It’s sad reading through the comments of all the Nervous Nancys who are splitting hairs on the word “assassination”. Lanphier and Barber thought it was an assassination, and the MEN of the time would all gladly assassinate Hitler, Tojo, Rommel, Goering, Yamamoto, etc and not feel bad about it.
