Statement From the Chairman of Heritage’s Board of Trustees (Jim DeMint Has Resigned)
Heritage Foundation ^ | 05/02/2017

MAY 2, 2017—Thomas A. Saunders III, chairman of The Heritage Foundation’s Board of Trustees, released the following statement to the Heritage staff about a leadership change at the organization.

___________________________________________

The Heritage Foundation’s Board of Trustees, by a unanimous vote, has asked for and received the resignation of Jim DeMint as president and CEO of the organization. The Board elected Heritage Founder Ed Feulner as president and CEO while we conduct a thorough search for his successor.

After a comprehensive and independent review of the entire Heritage organization, the Board determined there were significant and worsening management issues that led to a breakdown of internal communications and cooperation. While the organization has seen many successes, Jim DeMint and a handful of his closest advisers failed to resolve these problems.

This was a difficult and necessary decision for the Board to take. As trustees, we have governance and oversight responsibilities for this organization and our 500,000 members. We were compelled to take action.

Heritage has never been about one individual, but rather the power of conservative ideas. Heritage is bigger than any one person.

As Chairman of the Board, I wholeheartedly endorse this change. It will make Heritage stronger in the short term and the long run.

Heritage is a permanent policy research institution fighting for conservative ideas, as Ed Feulner often reminds us. We remain committed, as ever, to the principles that have made America great: free enterprise; limited government; individual freedom; traditional American values; and a strong national defense. This will continue under the leadership of Ed and his successor.

Feulner led Heritage for more than three decades and returns to our organization after serving on President Trump’s transition team. There is no one better to guide the ship while we seek our new leader and continue to push for conservative ideas and policies in Washington and around the nation.

As conservatives, we have a tremendous opportunity ahead of us to restore the principles of the American founding. You and the 500,000 Americans who donate to support Heritage have played a crucial role in making our work possible, and I look forward to working with you in the future. As we move forward, the Board of Trustees will be seeking your thoughts and input about our search for the next leader of Heritage.

Thanks to your support, our scholars have shaped public policy in a firmly conservative direction for the last 44 years and will continue to do so in the future.

I regret not being able to let you know sooner about this change. While we were trying to resolve this matter amicably, we honored our side of the bargain to remain silent.

I wanted to ensure that the Board’s decision was final before alerting you. Unfortunately, the media ran with speculation about this story before the facts could be disclosed. As a loyal Heritage supporter, I hope that you will understand the reasons that compelled these changes and stand with us in this time of transition.

Thank you for all your support and dedication to the conservative cause.

Sincerely,

Thomas A. Saunders III Chairman, Board of Trustees The Heritage Foundation

Trump really wanted to pass that health care.

It's not clear that the Mercers wanted Rynocare passed.

The reports are that WH is furious over Heritage opposing it.

I've seen reports that say that DeMint had Heritage attached at the hip to the Trump administration.

Who is the big backer of Heritage. Mercer.

There are other big backer of Heritage. The Koch Bros, for example,

Thanks for the link. Much more to the story, evidently.

Almost sounds like payback for helping Trump in the transition—the uniparty must have complained.

The President needs to write his own legislation—the traitors Ryan and McConnell certainly would do any heavy lifting for him.

I can’t vouch for the accuracy of this but twitter is alight with the idea that Heritage was behind Obamacare.

Many years ago Heritage argued that the requirement to purchase insurance was needed in a near-universal insurance market. They weren't for universal coverage and given that, they weren't for the requirement to purchase.

Since then the real Obamacare Demorats have cited the Heritage as being for the Mandate and thus being for Obamacare.

They are not!

Since DeMint was there I somewhat trusted Heritage. Now? Ppffttt...

I am watching and reading, staying objective but can say I’m decidedly less optimistic. And not in the mood to be making excuses for the 45 dimensional chess games.

Between Heritage, Fox, the Kushner Wing and Paul Ryan, I’m disgusted with the lot.

Democrats dancing in the streets.

You can believe whatever you want.

I disagree.

And Demint definitely sided with Freedom Caucus according to what I read as it pertained to the first health care bill.

Yep.

It is interesting that the Kushner/Soros thing is getting a lot more play right now.

The Cadre issue has been around for awhile.

That may be the case. But that would put Mercer on the side of DeMint.

Funny cartoon, but Trump is not being pulled left by Ivanka, Kushner, et al. He is with them. Trump always was NY Liberal.

Trump isnt the least bit concerned ith amoing America great, building a wall, bring jobs back, etc. It was clearly all campaign rhetoric and a lot of people are still buying it.

It should be as clear as day to all, Trump isnt going to do anything he said he was.

No, it wouldn’t.

Trump was touting the health care bill.

Was furious at Freedom Caucus...so by extension...Demint.

Oh and the Heritage Foundation had an individual mandate in the 80s and then in Romneycare..(not independently verified)

I need to see if I can get the real story on this...I doubt it, though.

Statement From the Chairman of Heritage’s Board of Trustees: Jim DeMint Has Resigned and will likely be working for the Trump administration by the end of next week.

I met Mr. DeMint back when he was a Senator from SC. He told me he was thinking about doing something else because of all the wrangling (read lobbyists and big money donors) going on in the Senate.

I know that. But it doesn't mean that Mercer wasn't on the side of the Freedom Caucus and DeMint.

Knowing Mercer's long history of support for conservative causes, I would think it improbable that the Mercer's wanted to see Rynocare passed, the Freedom Caucus trashed and DeMint out. And you haven't offered any evidence to suggest otherwise.

As I pointed out earlier, the HF only supported the principle of a individual mandate, given universal government coverage.

They are not now or ever for universal government coverage.

Yep! In this one fell swoop, the swamp just lost about 1/3 of its richest, most powerful denizens, K-Street. Wherever will they go? What’s to become of Gucci Gulch?

DeMint wrote a book. Every conservative should read it. Amazingly honest about how the Bush administration treated him and why he left the Senate.

I think you are wrong

“and we wrote at least one press release for a publication touting Heritage’s plan for comprehensive legislation to provide universal “quality, affordable health care.””
