Muhammad Ali's dark side revealed in new FBI files

A release of FBI files on the late Muhammad Ali sheds damning new light on the legendary boxer’s views about race and politics after immersing himself in the teachings of the Nation of Islam.

Ali referred to Caucasians as “white devils” and “crackers” and told mosque worshipers that “black women have the best sons and daughters in the world,” according to Federal Bureau of Investigation records obtained by Judicial Watch through a Freedom of Information lawsuit.

His deep involvement with the Nation of Islam and its racially divisive rhetoric and behavior is part of a record that deserves to be revealed and contradicts Ali’s image as a civil rights icon. The hundreds of pages of documents are related to the FBI’s investigation of Ali for evading the draft and the government’s monitoring of the Nation of Islam, which is described by the agency as an “all-Negro, quasi-religious organization which espouses a line of violent hatred of the white race, Government, law and law enforcement.”

I had a friend on the 1960 Olympic team who spent enough time around Clay to label him a complete Obamahole.

There were plenty of tears shed on FR when this nasty bigot finally croaked - bears mentioning.

We've got our share of white apologists, as well

“This is news?”

Only on this web site.

There is plenty of instances over the past 30 years when this was stuff was published, or a YouTube video shows it.

Ali himself admitted many years ago he was wrong on these pronouncements.

Here’s an interesting excerpt from a 1968 interview he gave to Bud Collins:

In a wide-ranging 1968 interview with Bud Collins, the storied Boston Globe sports reporter, Ali insisted that it was as unnatural to expect blacks and whites to live together as it would be to expect humans to live with wild animals. “I don’t hate rattlesnakes, I don’t hate tigers — I just know I can’t get along with them,” he said. “I don’t want to try to eat with them or sleep with them.”

Collins asked: “You don’t think that we can ever get along?”

“I know whites and blacks cannot get along; this is nature,” Ali replied. That was why he liked George Wallace, the segregationist Alabama governor who was then running for president.

Collins wasn’t sure he’d heard right. “You like George Wallace?”

“Yes, sir,” said Ali. “I like what he says. He says Negroes shouldn’t force themselves in white neighborhoods, and white people shouldn’t have to move out of the neighborhood just because one Negro comes. Now that makes sense.”

This was not some inexplicable aberration. It reflected a hateful worldview that Ali, as a devotee of Elijah Muhammad and the segregationist Nation of Islam, espoused for years. At one point, he even appeared before a Ku Klux Klan rally. It was “a hell of a scene,” he later boasted — Klansmen with hoods, a burning cross, “and me on the platform,” preaching strict racial separation. “Black people should marry their own women,” Ali declaimed. “Bluebirds with bluebirds, red birds with red birds, pigeons with pigeons, eagles with eagles. God didn’t make no mistake!”

At times he needed the police to take him back to his shack in SoCal. Seems like King took the lion’s share of his winnings. So, don’t think he thought about things.

Anyone who lived through the Ali championship yrs should be well awaye of all of this because it was public knowledge.

It ws only after he died that his past was “cleaned up” because he was black.

Ali, in his prime was a truly great heavyweight fighter. He had more speed and agility than anyone I can ever recall seeing and in my opinion may have been the greatest heavyweight of all time, including to date.

That said he was very far from being the sharpest knife in the draw.He was nothing more than a puppet for the black Muslims.

The reason he gave was he was a pacifist. Talk about irony?

It's not just white people -- Ali was a jerk to everybody, even people who befriended him.

Joe Frazier personally helped him with money and effort when he was trying to get his boxing license reinstated (after it was rescinded because of his draft refusal). Ali repaid Smokin' Joe by calling him a gorilla, an Uncle Tom and just about every other name he could think of. He demeaned him in public and insulted him in private.

Frazier was so offended and angry, that when he got into the ring, he (literally) beat Ali's brains in. He pummeled that guy into a bloody pulp.

An excellent documentary was on HBO a few year ago about this. Well worth watching.

Somebody on this board had experience as an inner city school teacher. He had some fascinating stories to tell. I remember one of the things he said was that there was a general agreement among his students that'd they would be screwed if they got rid of all the white people.

I think this is the result of an entitlement mentality formed over decades of being on public assistance. Kids in the inner city have no idea how things 'work'...all they know is somebody else runs things, and they depend on them. Sad really. Anyway, for that reason, I don't think it would ever cross their minds to move away.

He always was a jerk. And I thought so even when I was a kid. I wanted everybody boxing him to beat him senseless.

I have no doubt this is what he thought back in his early Nation of Islam days, but I wonder how much he changed as he aged. I’ll wait until I hear that side of the story.

Draft dodger, traitor, racist, anti-semite, anti-Christian, what’s not to like about “The Greatest”.

Shows how a lie can be made to look like the truth.

LOL. Most people don’t know how things work and depend on someone else to run things. But I know what you are saying.

Hey, at least he was pretty honest about it and still managed to be fairly jovial in his interactions. Not entirely sure he bought the whole thing as far as the beliefs of NoI. He was sort of like the old-school segregationist, purported klan types that I vaguely remember from childhood, most of whom had black friends. They were “good (n-words)” was the distinction that they always made.

I read a recent article (maybe in the Wall Street Journal) claiming that Ali was initially willing to be drafted but was told by Elijah Muhammad not to serve. Ali was afraid if he disobeyed Muhammad he would meet the same fate as Malcolm X and others.

I remember him well. He managed to get everyone to hate him because of his big mouth. Even the news media hated him.

Then he became a draft dodger, went to jail, became a moslem, came out against the Vietnam war.
Suddenly the news media fell in love with him and began a “rehabilitation” of his reputation from “hated” into “the most beloved sports figure EVER!”.

I read that years ago! Ali still won, but Frasier landed the punch that left Ali permanently punch drunk.
