Use is a behavior but unfortunately use leads to addiction in some folks and is not so simple after that.
Blubber on, liberal - the issue is not whether a damn is given but whether it's the proper place of government to try (futilely) to prevent it.
But how can they sit here and call for legalization of a drug that can kill you by some incidental second and third hand contact?
Legalization doesn't mean sold loose from a barrel with a scoop; regulation to protect the rights of third parties is the proper function of government. Many poisonous substances are legal yet appropriately regulated.

Is it pain relief they're looking for, or are they trying to escape from something else?
Many of these people are in physical pain. There's a lot of literature on the subject of fentanyl prescription abuses, not only prescribing the powerful opiate unnecessarily but cutting off patients too quickly.
They CHOSE the behavior that led to their affliction. Just as homosexuals CHOOSE the behavior leading to theirs. But I am expected to subsidize them through my tax dollars, because they made bad choices?
What would you say to folks who were set down the path of addiction by doctors who over prescribe opiates? It’s a real issue and one that is at the heart of our national opiate addiction epidemic.
Cause of death stats are likely being inflated by the government. If someone dies of cancer with bone mets the cause of death is listed as cancer and if opiates are found in a tox screen, or listed in a drug list that can be listed as a secondary cause of death and included in the stats.
The DEA needs an enemy so they can target drug companies, pain patients, physicians. No mission, no money for the DEA. Why do you think that the DEA is so insistent on keeping THC illegal or even allow it for medical use?

Most addicts are person’s with low self esteem.... Generally there are pyshological issues that drive the use.
This has hit home very close in my family. We are conservative and practicing Christians... We almost lost our daughter to it.... It is a fight every day and every inch to recovery.

I think a lot of it gets started with pain related issues. People addicted to medication may have low self esteem, but which came first, the low self-esteem or the addiction? That monkey on their back gets pretty heavy after a while.

One of the alternatives might be more Physical Therapist to rehabilitate those in pain, sound like a good idea right? Not so fast... They are upping what used to be a 4 yr degree to PHD need to practice... Are you freakin' kidding me? So how do we get around a Physical Therapist crunch? Beam me up Scotty...
For many older person’s it starts with injury and meds to dull pain. For younger person’s... they usually have manifested esteem issues well before using.
Is this new, no... but unlike drugs of the past... This stuff is highly addictive, deadly... and readily available at low cost.
