I have a close friend who has worked in STEM education for years. He’s done a lot of research on systems of education in Asia, and he has a surprisingly dim view of the Japanese system in particular. From what I’m reading in this article, he’d probably hold the same dim view of the Chinese system.

Sounds like a lovely place — if we can’t move there, let’s make it like that right here...[/sarc]

I don't understand the point author is trying to make... China is growing because their kids study harder ? All the recent Chinese growth is related to the low base effect. They were starting from the very low (much below natural potential) point due to decades of ridiculous system and foreign occupation before that.

“Gaokao is the three-day period each year when high school seniors in China take exams to see if they will be admitted to university. Put simply, the rest of their lives will be determined by their results.”

It's the same in a large part of the world, by the way.

This is true for Korea too.

It all descends from the system of Confucian exams tradionally used in China, Korea and other Confucian systems in ancient days. In order to have a place in the government or as a military officer, you had to pass the exams, and a lot of your young life (for those who could read and write, e.g., the aristocracy) was spent preparing for those exams.

I don’t understand why making our country more like China would be an improvement. Aside from the scenery, China is a pretty lousy place.

They CHEAT like nobody’s business. The Chicom leaders only release the test scores from the well-educated kids in the elite provinces. They leave out the fact that ALMOST A BILLION F*&^ING RURAL FARMERS CAN’T READ!!! Oh yeah, those people. So whenever I hear about the high Chinese IQ, and their high test scores— yeah right. I trust communists

In the United States we adjust the academic requirements, SAT scores for example, based on the applicants race. It’s a higher bar for Asians at many universities, much lower for African applicants.

Can’t no longer be blamed on environmental factors as we’ve made doubly sure that what we used to call “minorities” get whatever it takes to level the playing field, so to speak.

Something else must be at play?

Because the teachers are unionized to the hilt and minorities are allowed to do what they please or will cry “racism”?

My first thought on reading the title is that at least someone is eating Michelle’s lunches.

The Chinese aren’t majoring in “gender studies” and other such useless things.

Article is completely wrong; US student scores are lower than China ONLY because of demographic differences between US and China— if you compare apple to apple there is little difference.

2015 PISA SCORES
US AVG: 496 BUT
US Whites: 531
US Asians: 525

Mainland China AVG: 529

So US Asians and Chinese are pretty close, while US whites actually perform better than Chinese as a group.
