A gunman believed to be a supporter of former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders sprayed a hail of bullets at a GOP baseball practice Wednesday morning, critically wounding House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and injuring four others before U.S. Capitol Police took down the rifle-wielding assailant.
Scalise was in critical condition Wednesday afternoon, MedStar Washington Hospital tweeted. He had surgery after being shot in the hip and was initially said to be stable.

Bombs are often set off to divert police, fire away from an area where a real crime is executed.
Decoys, fakes, diversions, smokescreens, are all part of scripts written to carry out these operations.

We can’t be sure of anything we see. The only thing we can be sure of is who benefits.
I do not immediately jump on a news feed and accept it as accurate or even close to the truth of a matter.

If you do not understand that a patient’s condition declining from stable to critical post-surgery, (and these are the official statements from his attending doctors,) is a very serious negative change, and you somehow hope things will be better by not reporting that reality, and you think it appropriate to attack those who point out that reality,

If the bullet nicked his femoral artery, it is very serious. If left untreated, most people will bleed out in 5 minutes. Fortunately for him and us, there was a veteran army medic and surgeon at the scene that stabilized him until the emt’s arrived on location. Thank God! Another reason to carry at all times. If he didn’t have his security detail (most of us don’t) he and many others would have been dead before the police could have gotten there.
Actually, I think this is not unexpected. Critical means a patient has their own nurse and/or must be checked every hour—if I recall correctly. He just had surgery so I would hope he would get special attention.
I’m in Mr. Scalise’s district. It’s Republican through and through. It went heavily for Trump in 2016.

Depending on the angle of entry, a .223 round could get deep enough to hit the descending aortas at the small of the back.

It’s more than that, and appreciably worse. AMA and JCAH definitions are:
“Critical: Vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits. Patient may be unconscious. Indicators are unfavorable”.
It’s the “indicators are unfavorable” part that is the worst.
