Amazon is buying Whole Foods for $13.7 billion, the companies said Friday.
The deal values the grocer at $42 a share, a 27% premium to its closing price Thursday.
Whole Foods (WFM) had been under pressure from investor Jana Partners, a hedge fund that lobbied for the high-end grocer to seek a buyer to reverse declining share price. Shares had been trading at about $33 Thursday; trading was halted Friday morning on the news.

Hopefully that means that Amazon Fresh will be available in areas that have Whole Foods grocery stores.
That is one over-hyped and expensive deal.
Amazon is a leftist’s horizontally integrated tax avoidance scheme.
More ammo for Trump to take the antitrust sledgehammer to Mr. Bezos.
Amazon will dominate the grocery business within a few years.
That sounds like about one shopping trip to Whole (wallet) Foods.
i.e., Wegmans is better, cheaper, and not run by a bunch of leftists.

I agree. Whole Foods is a magnet for the nuts and berries liberals. Yes, we still have Trader Joes and Wegman’s.
This is a little weird to me.
Thanks for pointing out the prior thread. I searched Business Economy for the story. It didn’t turn up. Granted, I did not go the extra yard for a full site search. Mea culpa.
And they have a grocery service where you order online, and pick it up at the store (locally they've installed a special pick up area). And just last week, there was a story about Wal Mart dabbling in home delivery.
Amazon will have some competition.
Hopefully that means that Amazon Fresh will be available in areas that have Whole Foods grocery stores.
I don’t want to put all my groceries in one basket. Amazon will kill a lot of the competition. I don’t want the owner of the Washington Post controlling our food supply so I don’t see myself supporting them.
Here’s a good video on the subject:
He’s just being a smart businessman. He’s buying Whole Foods ‘cause he already has a paper to wrap the fish.
“Reportedly, Whole Foods will retain its name. “
Imagine if Microsoft was buying WF.
1 renamed, MS Foods 1.0
2 aisles are all rearranged so you can no longer find your groceries
3 viruses included in groceries
4 customer service desk staffed by heavily accented Indians, whose answer is 80%, “it is time to reinstall the shopping cart system. You haven’t reinstalled in months! This will fix everything. Yes, I am certain!”
I wonder if Whole Foods will drop their prices by about 50% to make them competitive?
5. Every three hours the store would shut down and customers asked to leave. Then 1/2 hour later the store would reopen.
It saddens me that the most attractive eye candy at my Whole Foods has green hair and a tat on her tit.
Whatever happened to normalcy?
What I DO like is that on the way out kids can take a free piece of fruit from a bin by the door. My kid gets a kick out of that, even if it’s fruit that is a little “off”.
Spot on!
