Nearly 16 years after advocates for wheelchair users first demanded access to the Grove Street PATH station, crews are putting the final touches on the station's new elevator. The $4 million elevator, located at the corner of Grove Street and Columbus Drive, is set to open on July 2, according to the Port Authority. Construction began in the spring of 2015.

James Weisman, CEO and president of United Spinal Association, one of two groups that sued the Port Authority over the station's wheelchair inaccessibility, called the addition of the elevator "a life-changing event" for wheelchair users. His group represents about 45,000 wheelchair users nationwide.

I seem to remember reading, years ago, that making the subway system in NYC wheelchair accessible cost about $1 billion. And that a fraction of that sum, invested, would throw off enough interest to provide every New Yorker in a wheelchair with unlimited taxi rides forever.

I want the elevator concession in NJ. Even knowing NOTHING about elevators I could build it for an even million (that is 20x$50K) and pocket the rest.

Knowing nothing about elevators, I specced one out for a 2-story ADA compliant lift. Tab for the mechanicals only was about 70K. Let's assume this is longer and larger and costs 5X as much. #350,000.00 all-in.
