The blackmail tax bill just passed and now going to the Governor's desk. I pay about 6K per year in property taxes and fees. No kids in school after this semester. I can work remotely from anyplace with high speed internet.
Tennessee...beautiful country..fairly mild climate and no state income tax.
I’m moving to Arizona in the next few months. Chicago has been a good place to spend my middle years, working, renting, and saving aggressively. But the thought of growing old(er) here makes my blood run cold. Fortunately I haven’t put down any permanent roots here, and leaving will be easy —— except for the usual logistical problems involved in pulling up stakes, chief among them the fact that I don’t have a car and I allowed my driver’s license to lapse many years ago! Really complicates things.
I can't imagine being without my own personal transport. Bought my first car at seventeen, and have never been without wheels, since. That was 46 years ago.
Where ever you go, don’t come to Texas. It’s too hot - roaches as big as SUVs and mosquitoes as big as roaches. Plus, there are way too many Illinois license plates already flying up and down the interstate.
Try a bellwether state like Iowa or Missouri where we need to shore up those 50/50 purple battlegrounds. Thanks.
Also carefully check high speed internet availability. Less than 1/2 mile from me 30 mbps cable modem is available, but the cable company has stopped building out. Even the offer of $25k to extend the line that 1/2 mile did not work. I have my choice of satellite internet with usage restrictions and latency, DSL with actual speeds of 1.25 mbps, a 4G cellphone connection with usage restrictions, or microwave internet (WISP). The latter is all of 5 mbps down and maybe 2 mbps up. No good choices
I’m in Kane county as well. My property taxes are $7500. We just got notified they are going up 5.6% next year. I wish I could move but it gets more difficult as you get older.
Yeah, that too. Good point.
I love living here so far, but you have to be careful about the specific place if you’re going to be out in the sticks and need the Interwebs.
Can you sell houses in Illinois? A lot of people want to leave, but first they have to sell their homes in Illinois...
There’s always Hughesnet if you fall in love with a place that has poor internet service.
Excuse me.
So me, my family and friends are Leftists?
Jerk.
Huh, never heard of that.
But now I have! I have been educated!
Thanks, I’ll keep it in mind if the cable net goes kaput.
SUMMERTIME
It's summertime, and the livin' is easy
The fish are a'jumpin'...and the taxes ain't high
Some one of these mornings, you're gonna rise up singin'
And you'll spread your wings and take to the sky
And you'll meet our friendly freepers standing by
So come on down, you Illinois-ans....don't sigh and don't cry
White sands are a'waitin', why freeze till you die?
(by George Gershwin, 1935....LOL)

Fred, I myself went into business in South Dakota. It was my first so I can’t speak to how easy it was based on a comparison. I will say I managed to go into business with only a State Tax number and $10 to register my name. It is the only State I know of that didn’t require a State License for my line of work. I would call that EASY.
Another thing; Concealed handgun permits are done at the local Sheriff office after 30 days of residence. Mine took 17 minutes and $10 to get!
The CATO institute produces a study every year ranking the States as to how FREE they are; South Dakota is always in the TOP 4.
Are you by Venice?
I’m seeing Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio Wisconsin and California tags like crazy in north Alabama. Wish they would go the hell home. We don’t need or want them here. Screwed up their homes and now want to screw mine.
I swear the first time I hear - we did it such and such back home I’m going to hit them.
what made you move to Richland?...
