Washington Post article linking Scalise shooter to conservative radio host sparks online outrage
FOXNews ^ | July 9

The Washington Post struck out with many on social media over an article that appears to blame a right-wing Illinois shock jock for the Virginia shooting rampage by a Trump-hating, Bernie Sanders volunteer who targeted Republicans during a baseball practice.

“What’s the point of this?" Buzz Feed political reporter Katherine Miller asked on Twitter. “The shooter hated Trump and there’s no indication in the story he listened to this pro-Trump host.”

Washington Examiner political correspondent and Fox News contributor Byron York tweeted, “Revision of the year: WP suggests, without evidence, Alexandria shooter was inspired by right-wing bigoted radio talker.”

“Devoted Bernie supporter shoots up baseball field of Republicans. Washington Post blames pro Trump talk radio in his hometown for it,” Heat Street contributor Stephen Miller said in a tweet.

The Post article, written by Peter Holley, pointed out Hodgkinson "shot four people at a congressional baseball practice" in Virginia -- but never got around to identifying the victims.

I'm honestly not sure I've ever seen one article (and tweet) that so neatly encapsulates why Americans by and large loathe the MSM. https://t.co/x5tuYjWhdY — Josh Hammer (@josh_hammer) July 8, 2017

Critics of the piece took to social media after it ran Saturday.

Even when a leftist is to blame, the media will blame the right. https://t.co/5k8c6bqH2b — Ashe Schow (@AsheSchow) July 8, 2017

“I'm honestly not sure I've ever seen one article (and tweet) that so neatly encapsulates why Americans by and large loathe the MSM,” self-described conservative Josh Hammer tweeted.

I have come to the obvious conclusion that people on the Left really, truly, honestly and with all their hearts and minds believe that if you really, really, really want something to be true despite clear evidence to the contrary; that if you just say and write your distortion of reality often enough, with enough conviction and -- most importantly -- say it loudly enough it will become true! It will become the "new" (and for the Left, the "better") reality.

You're almost there!

The left believes if you can make enough people agree the emperors new clothes are the finest anyone has ever seen, it DOESN'T MATTER if he's actually naked.....

Hodgkinson’s family should sue the Post the way Palin is suing the NYT.

While I’ll glance at the latest WaPo lie extracted onto FR and a bit of the FR commentary, I no longer bother looking at the article. A complete waste of time to read anything now published by WaPo because it’s all lies, rumors, and fabrications. The comments are an amazing cesspool of pointless vitriol, ignorance, name-calling, insults, and nastiness, contributing less than zero to reasonable discourse and discussion of ideas. I pretty much feel the same way about the NYT. CNN doesn’t even rate commenting on anymore.

I know many here at FR and in real life who feel and act exactly the same way about these so-called “news” sources.

IF the writer had blamed a democrat - say Schumer - an effing editor would have 'caught' the mistake. The Washington POSt sucks.

You’re not kidding!

I will always remember the monograph my wife had me review for her when she was in j-school. It was written by a Colombia journalism professor about the legitimacy of letting your personal opinion influence your writing of hard news.

She wanted me to read it to see if she was really getting the gist of what this guy was trying to say.

My assessment, which agreed with hers, was that he was advocating for allowing your personal opinion to influence your reporting as long as you REEEEALLY agonize over it before you do.

I’m not kidding.

The churnalism schools are training grounds for Leftard hacktivists, and Columbia is the worst of them all. What a disgrace.

That is something the Orks from Warhammer 40k would do, so I guess we can call the far left the Orks for they are trying to lead a WAHHG against the non-left.

Same O, Same O with the Compost “reporters”

Private East Coast Universities . . .young punk who writes for HuffPo, et al...bounces around jobs every year year & a half

It’s like the Compost can’t afford to pay REAL “journ-o-lists” any more. So it hires these wet-behind-the-ears left wing wannabes and pass them off as credible and competent and mature.

None of which they are.

They're right that Hodgkinson was spurred on, but it wasn't by anyone on the right, it was by the media and its Russian conspiracy nonsense, and celebs acting out trumps assassination.

Personally i think we should be rubbing Hodgkinson in the lefts face every chance we get. They deserve It (and I am more than sure they'd be doing it to us if the situation were reversed.)

Sadly, when I was at Michigan State-67 (not in Journalism) a master's from Columbia was very highly regarded.

One of the most absurd implications in the article—and there are more than you can count—is the notion that the host is influencing huge numbers of listeners across southern Illinois and eastern Missouri. The writer notes the station he broadcasts from has a 10,000 watt signal that reaches past St. Louis.

The monthly Nielsen people meter ratings for the 55 largest markets (including St. Louis) are posted monthly in a variety of forums. A quick check through Mr. Google shows that the Belleville station doesn’t even register in the St. Louis market. I’d be willing to bet a fair number of people in the area had never heard of the guy until the WaPo tried to link him to Scalise’s shooter.

Journalism at its worst. I’m old enough to remember when a story pitch like this one would get you thrown out of an editor’s office, and if the article somehow appeared in print, writer and editor would be looking for new jobs.
