Even if one never uses algebra, it’s a great way to develop reasoning skill - a commodity in short supply these days.

Just because you never use does not diminish the importance of mathematics. You never know when the ability to solve problems requiring logic or mathematical reasoning will be useful, and when the problem presents itself, not having that skill makes you less valuable or employable than someone with that skill. I would recommend mastering any skill you can and encouraging it in others.

drop algebra anyway as it is a waste of time You realize that Algebra stimulates the reasoning and analytical side of the brain, don't you?

Ever calculated the cost of something at a discount in your head? That’s algebra.
It has to do with reasoning skill and recognizing solving problems with using logic. You’ve been using those skills ever since you learned them.

I use it frequently.
Math, especially algebra, should be known to any civilized person.

I’m in my 60’s and all my working life has involved a lot of math on a daily basis. I’ve never needed algebra, though i did take it in school.

Do you keep balances on credit cards?
If you are too lazy to do math, how can you balance a checkbook, compute interest charges, or a host of other everyday tasks? It seems to me that you are at the mercy of artful and designing people.

I just completed my 40th year of not using Algebra.

. . . [,] I have never used it since leaving school.
I'm willing you guess you and everyone else in America has benefited from Algebra.
Algebra is used daily, sometimes moment-to-moment by the physicians who care for you and your family, the pharmacists who fill your prescriptions, the architects and engineers who design the bridges you driver across, the buildings and elevators you enter, the engineers who design the automobiles you drive, the designers of the electronics you use, including your computer and phone, every day, the publications you read, the designer of the toilet bowls you sit on (quite possibly HUGE toilet bowls because they know that some people can be or have large . . . what you are or what you have). Algebra is the basis for the dreams of your children and grandchildren. Anyone who has ever launched a rocket on Independence Day and began the dream of sending stuff off into outer space, has used algebra extensively along the way. I could go on and on.
So, simply the shortsightedness and/or lack of vision and wisdom of some in our society, should not punish others in our society who have who visions greater than walking around all day Saturday in their underwear, adding only belches or other disgusting habits to their repertoire during the day.
Making America great again depends on more than sloganeering and excitement. It requires those who can visualize and dream of things that require mathematics--the beginning of which is algebra.

How have you never used algebra? I use algebra nearly on a daily basis. Most real-world, daily math problems are algebraic.

A waste of time? Did you forget the sarcasm tag?
To: manc
If you ever use logic then you are using the part of the brain that algebra trains.
If you don’t use logic then you’re probably not happy on this site.

Algebra teaches one the relationship of variables in an analytical way. You may not had to solve an algebraic equation this last week but you likely viewed a graph or chart and understood how variables effected the outcome quantitatively.
I work in Excel spreadsheets daily and I used algebraic equations in them on a regular basis.
Also, if one ever uses a Hewlett Packard calculator with RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) format, a good grasp of algebra is necessary to operate it correctly. :-)

I am an industrial electrician covering both high voltage drive systems and microprocessor machine control programming. It is a non college degree job. It pays more than $30 per hour. I have to use algebra every day. We can’t find qualified new hires to replace us as we come closer to retirement.

It gives your mind some necessary exercise. But we should have a college track and a different track for those not going to college.
