In the end, it was a simple hand gesture - Senator John McCain pointing his right index finger in a downward motion to register a no vote - that ruined his party's seven-year effort to repeal Obamacare.
But in that signal in the early hours of Friday, the 80-year-old McCain also delivered a political gut-punch to U.S. President Donald Trump, a fellow Republican and a man he has clashed with repeatedly over the past two years.
McCain denied Trump what could have been the first major legislative victory of his administration, and demonstrated to the businessman-turned-president that Washington works in different ways from companies where CEOs have freer hands in dictating outcomes.
Despite McCain's tensions with the White House, Vice President Mike Pence was assigned the task of trying to convince him to vote for the so-called skinny bill that aimed to pare away parts of Obamacare.
Pence spent 21 minutes, according to reporters watching inside the Senate chamber, talking to McCain on the Senate floor.
McCain was not budging, even after taking a short phone call from the president.
After the Senate vote tally was announced in the Senate, McCain was embraced by senators from both sides of the aisle.
Democrats were delighted he had helped kill the Obamacare repeal effort and some Republicans just wanted to show their respect for the man.

Yep. The whole country can go to hell as a result but as long as he has his payback then he's happy.

Simple.
7 voted against full repeal.
The dying McCain was brought in to allow 6 others to fraudulently vote for the skinny repeal to give them cover with their constituents back home.
The plan now is to relieve the pressure Trump is causing them by getting rid of Trump using deep state.
McCain didn't defeat Trump, he defeated We the People.
What a guy.
Forget the belittlement. McCain got booed at his own campaign event for praising Obama. I just cannot see McCain backing Trump even if Trump had not said what he said. There are plenty of other Republican senators and representatives in the same boat and Trump has never said anything about them. But they certainly say things about Trump.
Actually, it was Melville in Moby Dick. Ahab shouts it as he's tangled in the harpoon ropes alongside the whale.

Guess that was before my time, LOL!
The only holy hell to pay will be political for McCain and the 2 other traitors to the American people. The only thing he defeated was his promises. McCain will be blamed, not Trump, and rightly so.
It’s unintended consequences. Not only does McCain leave Obamacare with the Democrats, but he also takes down every Republican who ran on repealing Obamacare.
In the meantime, Trump has already said, if nothing gets done he will leave Obamacare to rot on the vine and blame the Democrats for it.
Basically, without realizing it, McCain is helping Trump drain the swamp.
Juan has always been a small man.
Trump wasn’t handed a defeat - the entire GOP was.
McCain is not my favorite and has not been for many years. I was in the same room with him at a Congressman Shays event about 12 years ago and had to work to hide my revulsion. However, this was a lousy bill. Congress promised to repeal and I was hoping for free market solutions, not government solutions. But the entire Congress is in cahoots to keep their power and their perks in place so this will not happen without more clever maneuvers by Trump et al. The only good thing about it is it means I STILL don’t have to change my tagline!
Well, he made his point. He can die bitter. (And soon, one hopes.)
At least that was what a bunch of GOPe toons told me the other day.
On Jay Sekulow Live today, he and his panel were talking about how John McCain was going between Chuck Schumer and VP Mike Pence into the early morning hours last night as they tried to persuade McCain, regarding his healthcare vote on the “skinny” repeal.
Their conclusion, and mine as well, is that it was purposely made into an attention-getting spectacle by John McCain’s in retaliation against President Trump
By the way, even the “skinny” repeal included the defunding of Planned Parenthood, so McCain, who is very near to meeting his Creator, has succeeded in continuing the slaughter of unborn babies at the taxpayer’s expense.
He is a coward and a despicable human being, I would not want to be in his skin.

Agreed...
Hard to argue against that most of the time.
McCain, once belittled by Trump
and now everyone can see why.
McCain IS a little man.
Well, I don’t revel in anyone’s sickness. McCain has been a despicable person in Congress. He should have been sent back to Arizona a long long time ago.
(not inferring you do revel in his sickness)
I don’t like being put in a position to dislike a guy as much as I do McCain. He can thank his lucky stars I won’t be the entity judging him in his final judgement.
Funny how I’ll take a pass on judging him in his final judgement and find myself judging myself often enough.
