National security adviser HR McMaster used a 1972 photo of Afghan women wearing miniskirts to help convince President Trump to stay the course in Afghanistan, according to a report on Tuesday.
McMaster showed the president a black-and-white photograph of three women walking down a Kabul street in miniskirts to convince him that Western culture had once thrived in Afghanistan and could again, the Washington Post reported.
The photo was among the arguments the presidents staff used to make the case that he should not pull troops from Afghanistan the site of Americas longest war, the newspaper said.
In a speech Monday evening at Fort Myer in Arlington, Va., Trump declared, We will fight to win in the war-torn country.
The decision was a U-turn for the president who had previously called for withdrawing US troops, writing on Twitter in January 2013 that the war keeps wasting our money rebuild the US!

Mine were much shorter with matching underwear. At age 73...I’m LOL.
Is the the third time you’ve called it a WaPo article or the second?
It’s an article from the New York Post, not the Washington Post, aka the Washington Compost.
Trump was very very clear in his speech last night that we are NOT nation building.
Iran was very much like this in the 70s and earlier as well. And other places. They were once westernized. But, I think most FReepers understand this.. at least I hope they do.
You see the Iman in the background thinking this must end.
They’re in the 60’s by now & no doubt already in a Burka.
Sort of my thought. They really aren’t mini, but more of a on the long side for that time.
It’s true that Afghanistan produces only one thing of value now, but if they ever got their act together and had any kind of stability that would benefit corporate investment then they could be one of the richest nations on earth. Why?
Google “Rare earth minerals Afghanistan” sometime and see. This is a good introduction though: http://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/rare-earth-afghanistan-sits-1-trillion-minerals-n196861
It’s about like when they said he bombed Syria over a picture or because his daughter pleaded with him. Or when they said W invaded Iraq over daddy issues, for that matter.
....or "I'd hit that!"
“We either kill them over there or fight them in your back yard.”
Not if we stop letting them in.
L
Then again, all they really want is to live their lives and be left alone.
Yeh IMO Trump is likely going to kill as many Taliban as possible and then tell the Afghan military we are going home and they have 1-2 years to get the country under control before the Taliban recruit back up.
Fight to win is what Trump said we’re going to do. Didn’t you listen?
“Our national interest is keeping radical Islam out of this country. We either kill them over there or fight them in your back yard.”
I agree with you. And I don’t believe Trump will fight a war of containment, or by absurd rules of engagement that are designed to make America lose. I don’t believe he will allow the UN or Congress to direct it, either.
Afghanistan used to be one of the premier bow hunting destinations in the world back in the day. Not anymore, unless you want to hunt ISIS or Taliban......
A year or so ago my friend sent me an email with that picture, or one like it. In was in a montage similar photos of lifestyles in countries before Muslims completely took over. It did make an impact. It made me think of how America easily could be for my little nieces 15 or 20 years from now if something isn’t done to stop the invasion here.
Original source is the Bezos-Post.
What constitutes winning? How do we achieve that with just a few thousand troops when we couldn’t with 100,000? What are we trying to achieve, and what are we willing to do to achieve it?
I agree.
