Congress will return from recess next week facing continued gridlock as we lurch from one self-created crisis to another. We are proving inadequate not only to our most difficult problems but also to routine duties.
Thats not how we were meant to govern. Our entire system of government with its checks and balances, its bicameral Congress, its protections of the rights of the minority was designed for compromise. It seldom works smoothly or speedily.
It requires pragmatic problem-solving from even the most passionate partisans. It relies on compromise between opposing sides to protect the interests we share.
That has never been truer than today, when Congress must govern with a president who has no experience of public office, is often poorly informed and can be impulsive in his speech and conduct.
We must respect his authority and constitutional responsibilities. We must, where we can, cooperate with him. But we are not his subordinates. We dont answer to him. We answer to the American people. We must be diligent in discharging our responsibility to serve as a check on his power. And we should value our identity as members of Congress more than our partisan affiliation.
Lets also try that approach on immigration. The president has promised greater border security. We can agree to that. A literal wall might not be the most effective means to that end, but we can provide the resources necessary to secure the border with smart and affordable measures. Lets make it part of a comprehensive bill that members of both parties can get behind one that values our security as well as the humanity of immigrants and their contributions to our economy and culture.
Lets try it on tax reform and infrastructure improvement and all the other urgent priorities confronting us.

I don’t “hate” anyone, but if I did, John McCain would be high on my list.
Also a possibility that I considered.
It is taking too long.
Don't worry. He'll be gone forever soon enough.
“He’ll be gone forever soon enough.”
Soon enough, is not soon enough.
FUJMc.
Mightily.
Yeah, I know what you mean.
But we must allow the Creator to handle McCain's
"retirement" process. The Lord has his own schedule.
Patience is necessary.
I doubt John McCain wrote this with his brain getting scrambled in chemotherapy and all. Since the vote on ObamaCare, I have only seen emails and tweets from him. So I guess he is becoming a human shield for republicans who wish to be anonymous while they “resist” President Trump.
Well Red John, what’s stopping you old corrupt farts from returning to regular order? Who runs congress?
See The Conspiracy In Philadelphia 1787...Re Gary North... many others...

But the people of AZ have been stupid enough to elect him to the Senate and then re-elect him 5 separate times. My beef is with the fact that the rest of us who are NOT in AZ have to deal with the consequences of AZ voters stupidity (or selfishness, as the case may be).

I posit that is the fault of the People of the OTHER 56 (/s) States. Where is the censure of Congress? Rebuke by the (R) Party??
The electorate, and party members, whom have allowed their OWN elected to skate are as much to blame as those in AZ re-electing the @ssclown, McCain.
