Microscopic pieces of plastic have infiltrated tap water systems around the world, according to new research on worldwide water systems.
According to Orb Media, a non-profit data journalism newsroom in Washington, 83 percent of the tap water sampled globally was contained with microscopic plastic particles.
The U.S. had the highest contamination rate at 94 percent, and water sampled from Europe to India and in parts of the Middle East had plastic contamination above 70 percent, according to the Orb study.
Sites sampled in the U.S. included “Congress buildings, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency headquarters and Trump Towers,” the Guardian reported.
Most research to this point has concentrated on massive plastic garbage patches in the world’s oceans, and the impact of tiny pieces of plastic from those huge patches on marine life, which people then eat. But the impact of drinking microplastic particles on humans is still unknown.
“We have enough data from looking at wildlife, and the impacts that it’s having on wildlife, to be concerned,” Dr Sherri Mason, a microplastic expert at the State University of New York in Fredonia, and a supervisor on the study for Orb, told the Guardian.
“If it’s impacting [wildlife], then how do we think that it’s not going to somehow impact us?”
Researchers don’t know exactly how the tiny pieces of plastic are entering the water tables that cities use for tap water, but tons of plastic fibers from clothes discharged in wastewater, mishandled plastic waste, synthetic fibers in the atmosphere, tire dust washed into storm drains and streams are a few of the possible ways such large-scale contamination could be occurring.
According to a 2013 report, 300 million tons of plastic is produced worldwide every year, and millions of tons end up in the oceans and landfills.

Reminds me of being a kid staying at a friend's farm in the countryside for a week. Filled a glass with water from the kitchen tap, discolored water came out along with a tiny tadpole. I asked him where the water came from, and my friend said "Remember the pond we played at yesterday with the frogs?". I said "Cool!" and drank the water.

It is good. I don’t drink soda or sugary coffee drinks, or alcohol so I figure, since I don’t buy those things, I’ll buy good water instead. I was actually pretty surprised by how good Voss is. The whole family made fun of me, until they started drinking it.

I grew up on a ranch where we drank water about that color.
We made Iced Tea out of it so it wasn’t appalling.
Lived just fine and used fluoride toothpaste.

BERKEY WATER, you buy, the Cannisters and it drains all of the crap out of the Water. You can get the fluoride filters as well. Been using my King Berkey for 11 years. We are all good. Just filter your tap water.
I do drink Essential during the day because I have a genetically low pH balance.

The only thing I don’t like about the Voss is the plastic cap with Styrofoam liner. Gerolsteiner has a metal cap.
All surface water used in potable water supplies in the US generally must be filtered. (i.e. ponds, lakes, rivers, reservoirs,...etc)
Floculation simply increases the aggregate size of the particles for settling or filtration.
Ground water, may also be filtered, but generally ground water from a well, or from an aquifer, has already been filtered by the sand and gravel and sediment it flowed through in the aquifer to get to the well inlet.
Generally speaking, plastic is inert, not soluble in water.
Also plastics typically do not break down into smaller plastic fibers or plastic sediment. Plastics tend to shrink when heated up, because their molecular chains collapse upon themselves. May want to boil the water and extract the steam, re-condense and dispose of the solute as wastewater for filtration.
