DEVELOPING News Hurricane Irma Sep 8 2017, 2:54 am ET Hurricane Irma Pummels Turks & Caicos as Bahamas Braces

The eye of Hurricane Irma grazed the low-lying Turks & Caicos Islands on Thursday, rattling buildings after it smashed a string of Caribbean islands on its way to Florida.
With winds of around 185 mph, the storm the size of France has ravaged small islands in the northeast Caribbean in recent days, including Barbuda, St. Martin and the British and U.S. Virgin Islands, ripping down trees and flattening homes and hospitals.
Winds dipped on Thursday to 165 mph as Irma soaked the northern coasts of the Dominican Republic and Haiti and brought hurricane-force winds to the Turks & Caicos Islands.

Is this storm being over hyped? Wall-to-wall coverage, now storm weakening, just 150 mile an hour and building requirements in US require withstanding at least that much, but it is a great opportunity for the media to sow fear and undermine individual responsibility in favor of government directed mandatory evacuations, and so forth. Especially as follow-on to Harvey, which I think is very different because of the area, I think this reporting and fear regarding Irma is too much.
Apparently you’ve never lived through a hurricane. It’s the chart that is colorful, reality is devastating darkness.
I would have been out of Florida by Monday, having used the weekend to prep the house and my family.
We have had several here. 20 years ago it was an annual thing, “Would the hurricane hit us?” We had one, Isabel, IIRC in 2003 that was a pretty good one. 2 days of howling winds building to 75 mph, thank God no damage, eye hits, go outside, relax, then in an hour the wind starts up again. 2 more days of wind howling. No power for two weeks. Days of work with chain saw to get out of street. Need to get out for gas for generator. No AC. Everyone rank from chainsawing and no AC. Not fun. No party.

Hurricane aftermath is really awful. I lived in Boca Raton when Andrew hit Miami. Friends up north were sure the media was exaggerating the damage, I had to assure them there was no way they could possibly show the extent of the devastation.
I’m in the lovely Pacific NW suffering though the worst air in the country thanks to fires and more fires and more fires. It’s been many days since I’ve been able to see the trees a block away through smoke so think it’s classified “Hazardous for Everyone.” Please, God, bring us rain.
People are being conditioned to be sheep, do as told, when told, how told. Media is partners by sowing fear 24x7.
Storm already weakening. What is repercusions if storm doesn't meet fear? Weakened win is or should be withing building code requirements and unless people live on the beach, but most are being driven by fear rather than necessity.
Now storm predictions are smaller, less than 150 MPH and to the west and miss Miami and potentially all of Florida. Who pays the costs? And, someone wrote the other day about what if it just goes through into the Gulf? I keep wondering about this. So much fear and hype being thrown around. Guess no one is talking about Russia any more...
I just watched one of the news conferences this morning and they were telling people to head to N GA. Probably N Fl and our area will get a big influx. Pensacola is probably not a bad place to go unless the storm goes up the west coast.
Which is why Houston did not evacuate. Which people on FR are killing the mayor over.
It’s weakening to the top end of the current scale. If this thing hits anywhere remotely near a populated area, it’s going to be devastating.
Lived through Hurricane Mathews just a year ago. Lost power for a day, lots of trees down, Our town was closed for a few days, but we were in no danger of drowning on the 3rd floor condo. This time we are better prepared, enough water and food for 2 weeks without needing electricity.
If they live near the ocean, and their area is prone to flooding, and their residence is one level, then the governor has the responsibility to protect their lives by ordering them to move. There are many stubborn, illogical, low information residents who refuse to leave. Many times they have no place to go because of lack of relatives or friends in safer areas or simply have no finances to stay in hotels. There are safe shelters all over in Florida for such people.
