"I personally dont believe the Anthem is ever the time to make any type of protest," the Super Bowl-winning QB says.
Ben Roethlisberger on Monday afternoon released a statement saying he regretted his Pittsburgh Steelers boycotting the national anthem on Sunday.
The NFL team was the first of three to not come out for the pregame ritual.
"I was unable to sleep last night and want to share my thoughts and feelings on our teams decision to remain in the tunnel for the National Anthem yesterday," the Super Bowl-winning QB said in a statement. "The idea was to be unified as a team when so much attention is paid to things dividing our country, but I wish we approached it differently. We did not want to appear divided on the sideline with some standing and some kneeling or sitting.
He continued, "As a team, it was not a protest of the flag or the Anthem. I personally dont believe the Anthem is ever the time to make any type of protest. For me, and many others on my team and around the league, it is a tribute to those who commit to serve and protect our country, current and past, especially the ones that made the ultimate sacrifice."
Steelers' lineman Alejandro Villanueva, a former Army Ranger, stood an the entrance of the tunnel for the anthem. His jersey has been the top seller since that moment, according to Fanatics. The NFL shop also moved his jersey to the top spot on the team store page.

And yet you did it anyway. Obviously your personal beliefs are worthless.
Sorry for the French, but he is a p*ssy. I have more respect for someone who stands behind their position as opposed to a waffler like some dipsh*t politician. Let the right or wrong of such matters be handled accordingly.
Looks like the Cowboys have a stunt planned tonight.
We’ll know shortly.
Sorry Ben, you don’t get to have it both ways. Either you have the integrity to stand for what is right, or you accept the fact you don’t. Accept it, you will take the easy path when faced with adversity.
I won't.
Roethlisberger is a coward who runs whichever way the wind is blowing at the moment.
Arms locked in unity, everyone standing.
I’ll take it
We might expect President Trump to thank them for their dignified approach, too.
Hey Ben! Too late. You and yer pals really found a way to step on yer d!k$ by dissing our Banner and our National Anthem. Anything you say now WILL be used against you. And horse turds on yer big BLM Head Coach, Mike Rodham Tomlin, too, and the Rooneys. The NFL can go to Blazes, for all I care!
He and his fellow team mates cowered in the tunnel until the coast was clear. Meanwhile the one player who did come out now says it was all a mistake. A sorry, disgusting excuse for a Ranger. Just goes to show how sorry the Army is now along with the NFL.
I wouldn’t have thought of that analogy, but I see your point. It did work for them for a few years.
To me it’s almost unfathomable that the Steelers, the ultimate blue collar franchise, blue collar fans. Loyal, passionate, follow their tear everywhere...could be reduced to this. Could cower out of the National Anthem like snowflakes. Do they not know their fan base? Did they not know what the blowback would be? I’m watching youtube after youtube of Steelers fans burning terrible towels, tickets, other gear.
Total disbelief. This is a proud, legendary franchise. Coming from a Jets fan who wishes my team had the legacy of success that yours does.
You’re the damn Steelers. 6 Super Bowls. You do not hide in locker rooms during the National Anthem. That’s not you.
Ben needs to make a stand when it matters, not a day after testing the political winds.
I like Ben. Hope he gets the winds in his sails and corrects course.
And yet they ostracize Alejandro for actually honoring the Flag and his fellow warriors - hope he turns back around and stops choosing his pussy teammates over those who died for us all.
